Best steaks ever eaten - very authentic old style steak house - reservation absolutely required - if you are more than 3 or 4 => share one big steak.

The coffee and atmosphere in this place are great - it's a bit Leftist for most, but if you don't see the irony in buying a Che Guevara t-shirt/messenger bag/etc. you probably won't notice, anyway (besides, the coffee is good enough to legitimately draw in W., Rummy, Dick Cheney, and the ghost of Nixon for a few sips).

Great place to go for a hot breakfast or early lunch. Traditional Jewish deli with all the breads and strange, over-processed (yet, somehow delicious) mystery meats you'd expect from something like that.

Get the challah.

Arguably the scoot / hipster Mecca of MODern America. Home of Genuine Scooters, authentic Vespa gear from the last century, and some of the best shirts, hats, mugs, blues, and shop jackets around.

If you're ever in Chicago, and have any kind of soul, you'll go there.

Great 50's style diner in the heart of Chicago (and not *too* far from Boy's Town, which I found somewhat accidentally). Best for breakfast and brunch.

Go single. ; )

i've never really been that into chicago diner. i can see the appeal in theory, but in reality it has always been pretty gross. in addition to the food being "okay" at best, it's really expensive.

they do have really excellent baked goods, though!

waaaay down south but well worth the trip. everything is vegan, decently priced, and delicious. they only serve the vegan mac and cheese on tuesday nights, so keep that in mind. i've heard reports of the staff being very rude sometimes, but they have always been decent to me.

Friendly little place with a little overpriced but above average, idiosyncratic Thai. You just don't get duck breast with pan-fried noodles at your neighborhood thai place -- and they were delicious. Recommended.
