I was just in London and had the first good ice cream I’ve had since I moved from Portland, Oregon over 2 years ago. The ice cream at the cafe I stumbled across was obviously made in-house and from natural ingredients. The flavors were simple and pure, and the sweetness level was perfect.

For me, what I like:

  • All natural. I don’t like food coloring and additives. Ice cream should be a few, simple, high quality ingredients.
  • Less sweet. Really good gelato in Italy and the US/London and other places I’ve had are more simple—maybe they use real sugar and not sweeting corn or beet syrup(?).
  • Made in house and not from mix. Most ice cream in Vienna is made in house, but from mixes.

My barometer of a good ice cream shop is to look at their pistachio ice cream. If it’s bright green or obviously contains artificial color, then I know the producer does not have the mindset of a true artisianal ice cream maker. If the maker knows what they’re doing, then the pistachio ice cream will be the color of real pistachios, and will taste like pure frozen creamy pistachios with a hint of sweetness.

So far, I’ve not found a single ice cream shop in Vienna that rises to this level. Any suggestions?
