Taco Grill - (1/5)

This place just opened last week. First thought: Awesome, Vienna is really lacking in Mexican fast food. Unfortuately, then I tried it...
Prices are cheap, but at least so far the employees seem to have no idea what they're doing. It's pretty much built to resemble Taco Bell, but the quesadilla I had (which was heated -- or rather mildly warmed -- in what appeared to be toaster grill) did not even come anywhere near to the quality of the US fastfood chain: In fact, it was so bad I did not finish it.
I might give this place another try in a few months, but in the meantime I'll stick to "Fresco Grill" in 1090.

The least crowded of the cafes in the MQ, due to its hidden location behind the MuMoK. The staff is very friendly and the crowd mixed but kinda upscale, consisting mostly of museum visitors.Even though the food was good, I don't think I'll be back frequently -- it's just too expensive (9-16 Euros for an entree). But if you're at the MQ and the Daily and Kantine are full as they usually are, give the Mumokka a try.

Nice and large, relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. The menu is just how I like it, not very large but creative: I had "Crespelle mit Kürbis-Maronifüllung aus dem Ofen mit Schalotten-Oberscreme" and then pear dumplings that were so delicious my companion asked for the recipe. They apparently serve a limited selection of the menu until 1 am.The only drawback: It wasn't obvious to me which parts of the restaurant were non-smoking: Our table had a non-smoking sign on it, but guests two tables over were puffing away.

My favorite event location in Vienna: A former depot for theatre props and sceneries with several rentable gorgeous, wide-open spaces and a multi-level gallery. The atmosphere is not pompous at all -- rather a little industrial-looking, maybe even with a hint of steampunk. If you're looking for a place to hold your workshop/conference/launch party/art performance, take a closer look at the Semper-Depot. And if there's an event happening here, make sure you go.See here for rental info: http://www.akbild.ac.at/Portal/akademie/services/vermietungen (scroll down a bit)

A charming little temporary store selling home-made Christmas cookies in nicely designed jars. It's run by a graphic designer who was so fed up with the contract work she's had to do all year, she decided to do her own little thing for the last month of 2008.She tried selling the product online, but sending crumbly cookies through the mail turned out to be not the easiest task, so she got this temporary physical space instead. At 12 Euros a pop her cookies might not be the cheapest around, but as a gift they certainly beat anything you'll find in a grocery store, and there's a volume discount. So hurry and get yourself a jar or three before they close!Opening hours are 5-8pm, Mo-Fri.

Italian owners, open since 1964, ice cream made from fresh fruit from the market across the street. It's been a season or two since I've been there, but I'd recommend the melon (cantaloupe) and After Eight flavors. And get your cone with molten chocolate on top (even though I just remembered that option was officially called "Negertüte" when I was a child...)

However, I couldn't tell you exactly what that consisted of: Organic somethingorother with a side dish of all-natural whatchamacallit. Despite not being able to identify my food, it was all good once I had figured out which parts were sweet and which savoury. The atmosphere is just great, and I'll be sure to return for some more delicious mystery food soon. Or maybe next time I'll ask what it is.

Don't be fooled by the fact that it looks quite deserted and boring from the outside: Not that the Yang Haus is a trendy spot by any means, but it's quite large and lively inside, and they have a nice glass-roofed courtyard. The food is cheap (5-6 Euros for a lunch menu, 7.50 at the All-You-Can-Eat buffet) and plentiful, and there's a huge selection -- I swear the menu weighs at least a kilogram!

Cafe der Provinz - (5/5)

I knew I had to come back here when I randomly walked by once: Even from the outside, this cafe looks incredibly charming, radiating hospitality out into a quiet cobblestone street in the 8th district. Not unlike the Creperie in nearby Schlösselgasse, they serve a large variety of crepes, galettes and waffles – only here they're made from buckwheat and soya milk, and are a bit more expensive. They also have a huge selection of teas. The staff is very friendly, and there's a whole library of books to browse or buy.Highly recommended.

The Luftbad is a cozy, intimate, down-to-earth bar tucked away in a small street near the Apollo cinema. It has a little stage, which often hosts local funk/soul/acoustic/world music/jam/hip-hop bands.I haven't spent a lot of time there, but I've always gotten the impression that everyone else in the room knows eachother personally. Although that's probably because we actually crashed a private birthday party the first time we wandered in. I gotta say, the cake was delicious.

Organic food only, fair-trade everything, wooden (presumably handmade) furniture, absolutely no smoking, usually exclusively vegetarian menus, every meal also availible as a children's portion, a community pinboard, political discussion in the menu (This month: Burma, the Holocaust, and deportation practices), local art on the walls and an extra room for rent to yoga groups and citizen initiatives: Every cliche in the book comes true at this fiercely indie organic restaurant hidden away in a quiet side street near Schottentor. So put on your Birkenstocks and enjoy its honest charm and affordable, delicious, healthy food.

Open only on Friday and Saturday nights from 6-2, they serve a different, creative four-course menu (with vegetarian choices as well) each week. When I was there, every course involved apricots in some way, but it's not always that gimmicky. Check their website for the current menu -- but beware that they close during the summer. The food was pretty good, and the variety, creativity and atmosphere make this a winner -- I'll certainly come again.

A stark contrast to the location and its usual concert fare, these are some of the best concerts in Vienna, bringing awesome, relatively obscure indie bands to Vienna, often for the first time. The venue isn't worth more than a single star, but it gets three from me for hosting the Gravity.

werkzeugH - (5/5)

Plenty of space, a great atmosphere and free wifi make this an awesome place to get some work done in the afternoon or just hang out with friends later in the evening.Think Phil or Möbel, but with superb and cheap food (limited to 2-3 new and unique choices each day). They also host interesting cultural events from time to time.

Far less sophisticated than its name might appear to suggest. Go there for some cheap late-night Schnitzel and beer (until 2am, or midnight on Sundays), as long as you don't mind mainstream radio playing in the background.

Relaxed, loungy bar with an attached absinthe shop. It attracts a somewhat upscale crowd, but less so than other places this close to the WU.
