Twist & Shout - (5/5)

Uh, what record haven't I bought from, and more importantly, what non-music-appreciating acquaintance/friend haven't I forced to boredom by time-consuming visits to this venerable institution? Twist & Shout seems to have found more suitable digs in their new-ish location across from East High and along with a branch of Tattered Cover, adds a bit more pizzazz to East Colfax. What the store might lack in the charm of a Championship Vinyl it makes up for in its professionalism and well, their stock of records, books, DVDs, and assorted music and non-music paraphernalia. Ok, so it's not as massive as Amoeba, but like all good record stores, if you can't find it, they'll try to get it for you.

The Fabric Lab - (5/5)

I really really love this place. They have a great variety of design books, great cupcakes and pastries and cereal!!! They also have this awesome blindbox cupcake with a surprise Munny doll inside. They have a DJ that spins every Friday night. Open late Friday and Saturday until 2am. All and all it's a great place to hang and catch up with people. This place is definitely for the hipper, more savvy crowd.

I'm love what the owner has done with the Colfax block. She also owns The Fabric Lab. They also plan to put a patio out in the summer, which will be awesome! I just wish I wasn't leaving Denver so I can enjoy it more often.

Very unique clothing, jewels, music and other items for guys and girls. Lots of "how do" and DIY books and patterns. They also offer classes to learn how to sew and create certain items but also workshops where you can learn how to open your own boutique. Downstairs there is a great collection of vintage items, anything from a pimped out bar to lovely lacy kitchen aprons.

It's a theatre, that features independent movies and also features a bar. Can't beat that. I had sworn off movie theatres all together and stuck to my netflix until being introduced to the Landmark Theatres (includes Chez Artiste and the Esquire). People are there because they really want to see the flick, so there are never any obnoxious 7th graders waiting to ruin your night. The last movie I saw there was Pans Labrynth, which I also highly recommend.

City, O' City - (3/5)

I don't yet know how I TRULY feel about a space that quotes Boris Vian (in French!), but it's owned by the Watercourse folks (and located in the old space), so it should be ok, right? The preliminary reviews were pretty much on the dot; City is really more of a bar that happens to serve coffee (and veggie pizzas), a stylish nook that's kind of like a Cheers for the indie/creative community. Having said that, I was kind of intimidated about dining here, but the servers are in that friendly but unobtrusive Mathlete/A.V. club fashion, and the ambiance on one Saturday afternoon rather low-key. Perhaps I'll give it a second (or third) round.

EDIT: I went here four times in one week. Go for the #3 pizza with seitan!

Wax Trax - (4/5)

Wax Trax represents the dying breed that is the neighborhood record store. Small and compact, WT deals in the latest work from primarily indie and underground artists. It has a very small used selection as well as a few vinyl albums. The majority is brand spankin' new CDs. If it seems as though they are perpetually understocked, ask the friendly staff for assistance. They have several copies of albums that they just don't display. The overall highlight has to be its meticulous organization (often a rarity in a record store) and the little hand-written placards for each artist. Many of these placards contain advice, descriptions or factoids about the bands. Placards run from the fairly obvious ("Death Cab for Cutie is one of the most popular bands from the Pacific Northwest") to the helpful ("Panda Bear is the solo project of Noah Lennox from Animal Collective") to neither here nor there ("Deerhoof is experiemental rock with a cute female lead singer").

From vintage to just plain ol' "preloved" wear, the selection is, at best, eclectic, perhaps mirroring its clientele. Sometimes you find something you fall in love with and want to take home with you. And sometimes you just want to check out the people that frequent the place. What's cool is that you can bring your clothes in for cash or trade. That's not guaranteed, however, as the staff are quite picky. Don't sweat it, though; they are in the fash biz, after all!
