Tattered Cover - (5/5)

There is no lovelier, more welcoming store in the whole of the 16th St Mall, nor in the whole of Colorado for that matter, than this LoDo branch of the TC triumvirate. Since the Cherry Creek closing and relocation to East Colfax, the LoDo branch is now the oldest, installing itself in the beautiful Morey Mercantile warehouse in 1994. Exposed interior framing and cozy, antique furnishings lend a rustic touch to your exploration of two floors of books, so like a Borgesian paradise, that you might find yourself hard-pressed to leave. All TC branches offer literary events, from readings (kids' storytimes are especially popular), signings, and community discussions, as well as coffeeshops and newsstands (non-English press included).

Stella's - (3/5)

It seems as though everyone, their dog, and their dogs' ticks rave about this deceptively diminutive caffeine den on South Pearl. A great gathering place that serves Pablo's coffee and offers innumerable nooks and crannies for working (DU is close by), chatting, or just lounging with your canine friend. The service can vary widely, from the quirky to the laidback to the super-friendly to the downright mean, but of course, this never deters the regulars, whether it's people from the surrounding neighborhood or stressed DU students. I'm giving it three stars only because I don't go often enough, and when I do, it's always packed. Take what you like from that assessment. I'm sure I'd frequent it if I lived closer.

The Market - (3/5)

I haven't given The Market enough chances, but there's really only one thing I like about the place: sidewalk seating. There are two components to this place, which is the coffeeshop at the entrace, and then the deli, as you move further back. For me, mornings are best with a coffee or a hot chocolate, or for those sickly moments, a steaming cup of Republic of Tea honey ginseng. The baristas are friendly enough. As an undergraduate, I passed this place on the way to and from classes, but given its LoDo Larimer St. (read: SUPER. BOUGIE.) environs, it's not the kind of place I would normally frequent, even though their croissants are oh-so-scrumptious. Plus: outdoor seating, but other than that, I wouldn't go out of my way, even for the croissants.

Cafe Europa - (4/5)

I agree with the Cowboy--Cafe Europa IS a nice spot, with an unassuming exterior but tasteful interior and offering very comfortable seating of various shapes and sizes. Since I've only partaken in their coffee drinks, I can only vouch for those, my favorite being the "Dark Toffee" which is a mocha with toffee syrup and dark chocolate powder by Ghirardelli. The "Florentine," which is half coffee, half hot chocolate isn't too bad, either. Soy milk can be yours for a little extra.

Paris on the Platte - (3/5)

Oh, it HAD to be added. The clientele varies according to day--especially during weekends, quite popular at night thru the wee hours of the morning with young-ish folks who probably idolize Sartre, Ayn Rand, or maybe even some more obscure philosopher of whom I've never heard. When it's light out, it has a more casual, less pretentious vibe. The service (to your table) also varies, but it is usually friendly. Local art decorates the walls, the hummus sandwich is pretty darn good. If it weren't one of the only "cool" cafes open late at night, well, then, I guess we would have other (better?) options, obviously.

Leela European Cafe - (3/5)

Leelas European Cafe is a wonderful place to play scrabble, any time of day. I remember first going when there were one or maybe two people, then as time progressed, many more people began showing up, to play scrabble. Leelas is also became a great venue for open mic sessions, poets, artists, and even flamenco damcing lessons. There choclate cake is delicious, especially when served with Levazza coffee. I am happy to see that there is a place where I can go, watch a band perform, and learn some new steps. Bravo.

Buzz Fill'er Up Cafe - (4/5)

Just catty-corner from the Esquire, Buzz is small, cozy, and quaint--just the way I like it. Owners are very friendly and serve Ethiopian coffee for either walk-in or drive-thru customers. Yes! This is one of the few non-Starbucks I know with a driver-thru. After all, the cafe has been converted from a garage, which adds to its charm. Outdoor seating popular on sunny weekend afternoons. The only negative is that the cafe is not open too late (til 6 on weekdays, I believe).

The Coffee is very well made here, especially Lattes. The atmosphere is very down-tempo, I would come here by myself rather than to socialize with friends. people usually go outside to use there Cell phones. It's like a library, lot's of people go there to surf the web(Wifi) and study.

I hear they make good sandwiches too.
