Lean Startup Conference Simulcast in Vienna

On Monday, some of the leading advocates of the Lean Startup Movement gathered in San Francisco for the Lean Startup Conference 2012. The event was streamed to more than 200 locations all over the world and the Lean Startup Circle Vienna was one of the official simulcast partners. More than 30 members of the Group joined the event at Sektor5.

The programm was filled with talks from innovators of startups and established companies alike and gave insights into the lean startup methods in use. I have to admit that the first hour was not easy to follow, so we had a bit of a difficult start – but I partly blame the static camera perspective of the livestream for this. ;)

My takeaways as one of the event hosts are the following:

  • use a different format next time where people can join and leave the conference talks as they like
  • enable engagement in interactive sessions, workshops or games in parallel (instead of using the breaks for this)
  • rather go for the time delay option, show the conference video that is published 48hours after the conference

But altogether a very nice evening with great people and interesting conversations.

Merry cashmob everyone!

With the holidays just around the corner we need presents, loads of them. For friends, family. Already stressing out over what to get for whom? WORRY NOT! We will help you out! During the last Instawalk we already stopped by west of vienna in Westbahnstraße, that opened doors to all gadgetfreaks and Japanese fun cams fetishists in May 2012.

Christian Zagler and Bernd Gruber wish us a warm welcome during the upcoming cashmob in their store.

“Things that you don’t necessarily need, but desperately want”, the Toycams make for a great present under every Christmas tree. Make sure that you get your gifts in time this year and join us for the cashmob!

Need to know: the cashmob will take place on the 4th of December, a tuesday, and start at 18:30. You’ll have about an hour to shop-till-you-drop at west of vienna (Westbahnstrasse 25/2, 1070 Vienna). Nice to know: there will be Punsch, cookies, and loads of toy and fun cams and gadgets to try out!

The ‘rules’:

– Discover new local shops…
– Spend at least 10 €
– Meet new people
– Have a great time! :)

I think your review is funny!

The possibility to respond to the reviews of fellow Tupalo members is baked deep into the Tupalo mindset. But what if there’s not really something you’d like to add? What if you actually just want to give a virtual ‘thumbs up’? That’s where our “helpful/funny/cool” checkmarks (aka HFC in the office) come in handy.

Right beneath every review you’ll find 3 buttons:

When you click on ‘funny’ for instance, the reviewer gets an email from us letting him or her know that you noticed the wit and care he or she put in to the write-up. How’s that for a reward, huh? Clicked on the wrong checkmark because your eyes were still moist from laughing? Just hit the same button again and the green check disappears. And, yes, you can mark a review as helpful AND funny AND cool!

Naturally you won’t see the buttons beneath your own reviews, but we do list any feedback you get on your user profile. Go and check it out if you’ve lost track already ;) :

You can spot review talent on our city pages (check out New York!) or on the leaderboard of your city.

Don’t let your fellow reviewers hanging – tell them what you think of their reviews! :)

Ik vind je recensie grappig!

Sinds jaar en dag kun je op de recensies van andere Tupalo gebruikers reageren. Maar wat als je eigenlijk alleen maar een virtuele ‘thumbs up’ wilt geven, of niet na wilt denken over wat voor stuk proza je nu weer als reactie gaat opgeven? Dan komen de “nuttig / grappig / cool” vinkjes – Tupalo-intimi noemen deze feature HFC (helpfulfunnycool) – handig van pas!

Direct onder elke review bevinden zich 3 buttons:

Wanneer je een recensie van een andere gebruiker bijvoorbeeld als grappig markeert, krijgt hij of zij een email van ons omdat wij denken dat iedereen het fijn vind om een beetje positieve feedback te krijgen nadat je je best hebt gedaan op een ronkende review over de nieuwste uitgaansgelegenheid of een zorgvuldig geformuleerde ode aan de klassieke gerechten van restaurant x.

Vind je de recensie toch niet zo grappig, of heb je hikkend van de lach per ongelijk op ‘nuttig’ geklikt? Door nogmaals op hetzelfde te klikken, verdwijnt het groene vinkje weer. En natuurlijk kun je een review ook nuttig EN grappig EN cool vinden!

Onder de recensies die je zelf hebt geschreven zie je uiteraard geen vinkjes, maar de hoeveelheid nuttig-grappig-cool’s die je krijgt houden we wel netjes voor je bij, op je eigen profiel. Handig, want dan weet je hoe je er voor staat!

Op onze ‘city pages’ (zoals voor Rotterdam en Amsterdam) kun je recenseerpotentieel spotten, net als in de ranglijst van jouw stad! Wat let je, rock on en geef feedback! ;)

Lustig, hilfreich, cool

Die Möglichkeit, auf eine Bewertung per Kommentar zu reagieren, gibt es auf Tupalo ja schon lange.

Was aber, wenn man eigentlich nicht wirklich etwas hinzuzufügen, zu berichtigen oder an generellem Senf dazuzugeben hat, aber den bzw. die AutorIn einer Review trotzdem wissen lassen möchte, dass man diese für besonders gut hält? Dann kommt unser “helpful/funny/cool”-Feature (Tupalo-intern auch gerne mal auf “HFC” verkürzt) als alternative Feedback-Möglichkeit zum Einsatz.

Wenn Du eine Bewertung besonders hilfreich, lustig und/oder cool findest, kannst (bzw. sollst!) Du das Deine Mit-UserInnen wissen lassen, um sie in ihrem Tun ein bisschen anzuspornen. :)

Direkt unter jeder Review befinden sich 3 Buttons:

Wenn Du einen davon klickst (siehe Abbildung), bekommt der bzw. die VerfasserIn eine E-Mail zugeschickt, in der ihm/ihr mitgeteilt wird, wie Du die Bewertung findest; alle BesucherInnen von Tupalo.com sehen Dein Feedback natürlich auch, eben direkt auf der Spot-Page, unter der Review.

Bei selbstgeschriebenen Bewertungen fehlen die Buttons klarerweise (siehe oben), dafür bekommt man auf dem eigenen Profil diese “Likes” aufgelistet – meine eigenen Bewertungen fallen ja anscheinend eher weniger lustig aus ;) dafür werden sie doch immer wieder als hilfreich eingestuft:

Falls Du Dich einmal “verklickt” hast, kannst Du das durch einen nochmaligen Klick auf den entsprechenden Button wieder rückgängig machen – das grüne Häkchen verschwindet dann wieder – und natürlich kannst Du auch mehr als einen Button anklicken, eine Bewertung also hilfreich UND lustig UND cool finden!

Auf der Tupalo Wien-Seite kannst Du schon mal Ausschau nach potentiell lustigen, coolen oder hilfreichen Bewertungen halten, ansonsten findest Du aber sicher auch über unsere Rangliste interessante UserInnen mit besonders gut geschriebenen Reviews! Viel Spaß beim Feedbacken!

Rails + Girls = Ruby Magic :)

I just returned from a little tech adventure – I had the pleasure to be one of the happy participants of the Rails Girls event in Zürich! :)

As a project manager I usually don’t code… but of course it is always good to have some knowledge in that area, especially when you are working at a web company (duh!). During the day you pick up a lot of things and hear all different kind of terms and geek speak when listening to your fellow co-workers from development. Backend, frontend, database, method, string, object, unicorns, master, server, commit, pull request… Yeah, sure – I kind of know what all of this is. But, there are a couple of white spaces on the map. And to get the big picture on that topic, white spaces are not very helpful.

I heard about Rails Girls quite some time ago when the TupaBoys attended the Railsberry conference in Krakow and were quite impressed by the Rails Girls presentation Linda Liukas (Co-Founder of railsgirls.com) gave at that occasion. And since the Rails Girls events are currently taking place in different locations all over the world I wanted to be part of it and applied. Thus, last Friday I packed my bags for Zürich and dived into the world of Ruby on Rails. After the installation party on Friday evening and some very useful tips from the coaches, I was totally prepared for the big day.

The story of 4 Tupaleros and a lot of Rails Girls

Last weekend four Tupaleros went to Zürich to take part as coaches and participant at a Rails Girls event. Our “Rails Girls veteran” Consti was joined by Michi and myself (Johannes) as additional coaches at the event and Nina, who participated after she caught the Ruby on Rails virus and decided to get herself into serious & fun web development. Learn more about Railsgirls and Nina’s experience in her post.

It’s great to share your enthusiasm and experience for web-development in Ruby and Rails it’s also a great opportunity to get to know the local Ruby and Rails community and check out their favorite places and venues. I mean, after all we are Tupalo employees ;) Rails Girls Zürich proved to be of especial greatness. The event itself took place at the Hub Zurich, a collaborative space, but more above all, “a space for encounters, exchange and inspiration, full of diverse people doing amazing things”. The Hub is nicely located inside a train viaduct in Zurich’s hip district 5 and it’s part of a global network of collaborative spaces (btw. also has a Vienna branch). Additionally, a big plus for the the superb, diverse (+vegan, +lactosefree) and perfectly organized catering by Koru Lounge+Cafe.

Tupalo coaches at Rails Girls Zurich!

Today and tomorrow Consti, Michi and Johannes swap the Tupalo office for HUB Zürich (Viaduktstrasse 93-95) to teach some Rails Girls how to code!

Consti is a veteran when it comes to coaching at Rails Girls’ workshops (read his latest recap) and it’s no surprise that he’s working on a Vienna edition too. Helping him out there (amongst others) is Nina, our project manager, who’s attending Rails Girls Zürich as a participant to fully get a hang of the process.

Wir haben eine neue Homepage. Und sie sieht richtig hübsch aus!

In den letzten Wochen haben wir Tupalo.com einer kleinen Überholung unterzogen. Zum einen wurde unser Ranking-Algorithmus verbessert, um die Suche nach den derzeit angesagten und neu eröffneten Locations einfacher zu gestalten. Zum anderen waren wir der Meinung, dass unsere Seiten einen etwas einheitlicheren Look bräuchten.

Um das Ganze auch auf der Startseite durchzuziehen und somit abzurunden, gab’s noch eine neue Homepage dazu. Auf dieser neuen und verbesserten Homepage werden wir in der nächsten Zeit einige unserer persönlichen Favoriten präsentieren – handverlesen und mit passenden Fotos im Hintergrund.

Die neue Homepage soll Dir helfen, neue Restaurants, Geschäfte oder auch Bars zu entdecken. Probier sie einfach mal aus und lass uns wissen, wie sie Dir gefällt! (Um die neue Startseite sehen zu können, musst Du übrigens ausgeloggt sein.)

We hebben een nieuwe home page. En mooi dat ‘ie is!

De afgelopen weken hebben we het design van Tupalo.com flink op de schop gegooid, arm in arm met ons herziene algoritme, wat het ontdekken van trending en nieuwe spots een stuk makkelijker maakt! Als slagroom op de taart intoduceren we een nieuwe home page, met de complimenten van Michi:
