Well, it seems the new owners which took over in the beginning of May are really committed to this place. I was there today to have a chat with them and they are really nice.
It seems they got rid of the smell in the toilets :-)! So this starts to become a better place, and of course one of the cheapest in Christchurch.
The upside: It seems you can't get a cheaper accommodation here. We paid 45NZD for a three-bed room for the night. The new owner who took over just a week ago is quite nice and offered even that we get a free night if we stayed for a week and mentioned that he cooks for the guests once a week.
BUT, the downside: The rooms are so basic it hurts. No cozy feeling. The toilets smell like you get tears in your eyes. Which means you'll cry when taking a shower, because that's in the same room.
Hopefully the new owner is able to keep his energy and renovate the place, then it would have the potential to be a secret gem for the traveler on a budget.
