The Hofbraukeller is one of my top three (3) favorite places in all of Munich. Small but beautiful biergarten, historic old building, good food and, of course, very good beer.
I have had the good fortune to have sipped a beer here a few times, but I ate there only once, in 1996. As I remember, the food was excellant and the waiter was extremely nice and patient with my very poor German.
This is not the loud, boisterous crazy house filled with insane, drunken tourists like the better-known Hofbrauhaus on the other side of the river. This place is much more relaxed, sane, and since there are few tourists there, it is thus filled with locals. In other words, it is a much more authentic German beer hall experience. Even though the beer might not be quite as good as Paulaner or Augustiner, I still really love it there.
