schwimm-review folgt hoffentlich bald.

Very nice cafe that is highly recommended if you just want to have a quiet read.

Cafe Jelinek is literally the quietest place I've ever been to. Very relaxing, beautiful old interior, cosy and charming. And of course you get a great mokka there.

Closed Der Wiener Deewan
Liechtensteinstraße 10
1090 Vienna

Reviewed 12. Nov 2006

Der Wiener Deewan is a restaurant with a different concept: There's a buffet of 5 different dishes, 2 of which are always vegan, and you eat what you like.

But not only that, you also PAY what you like. So if you're really hungry but only have a fiver in your pocket, head on over there. But be sure you come back another time to give them a tenner for the food! You get the idea.

Most people will class this as Indian food but the owners are actually from Pakistan as far as I know. It's delicious and by default rather mild. You can always add spicy sauce though.

Be careful, it can get quite busy at times.

A second unit that is located more centrally in addition to the HQ of Formosa Food at Zirkusgasse.

This place is great, you get lots of vegetarian and vegan fake meats like chicken and ham, you get scheese and tofutti cream cheese, you get sweeties, and you can even get a snack there, as its a shop/restaurant.

Closed Fresh Soup And Salad
Wipplingerstraße 1
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 23. Feb 2007

Simple soup-shop in the first district that does what it says on the tin: fresh soups, currys and of course salads.

They always have vegetarian options, and they're kick ass. They even ask you if you want your curry sprinkled with coriander or parsley, they obviously think about what they're doing ;)

Other than that: clean layout and design, really refreshing. Everything is available for take-away, and if you come after 5pm you get a meal for € 3,-. Nice touch!

Closed Käuzchen
Gardegasse 8
1070 Vienna

Reviewed 01. Jun 2009

Käuzchen is one of the places you go to and forget time.

It's a beisl, a restaurant, a bar and a beergarden all rolled into one. It's pretty studenty and very old-school, it's been around forever - and it's not very bobo, which is a nice for a change in this area. Very down to earth and also charming; perhaps "rustic" is the word for it.

The menu is greasy and meaty, sweet and veggie; it is VAST, they have everything on there, from Fridattensuppe to Steak, from Schwarzbrot to Palatschinken. They also brew their own beer.

In the warm months of the year you can sit outside on Heurigen-benches. Go there if you want to go out with work-mates or for a quiet chat with a good friend. It's that kind of place :)

Reviewed 14. Nov 2006

i love lena und laurenz, they're always super nice and they even make sure there's enough "hummous und chips" sandwiches in the fridge in case i drop by randomly at lunch time.

i've been today and to my delight found out there's a new vegan sandwich out...it has grilled aubergine, olives and pomodore. and tofu of course. nice touch!

the place is also super stylish in my opinion. top.

Closed Mandu & Co
Rochusmarkt 40
1030 Vienna

Reviewed 20. Jan 2007

Mandu & Co is a small restaurant located on the Rochusmarkt.

It serves a nice selection of Asian (mostly Thai) specialities like Mandu (stuffed Pasta-style dish like japanese Gyozas), Kimbab (like Maki) and the outstanding Yubuchobab (tofu-layer stuffed with rice - the Japanese know it as Inari. As far as I know this is the only place in Vienna you can get these!).

They also have fried tofu, fried noodles, kimchi - as you can see, a whole variety for a small restaurant like it is.

Price is reasonable, food is excotic, definetly a rare find and recommended to visit if you're in the area!

i give it 5 stars, too, which is rare.

rhiz is just chill and one of the more mature places up on the gürtel. which sounds fantastically snobby, but i dont mean it that way. anyway, nice place, good music and a joy in summer when you can sit outside, too.

Closed Samolis (Closed)
Schwarzspanierstraße 22
1090 Vienna

Reviewed 09. Dec 2006

the lay-out and all is not perfect, but this thing is growing, and they didn't have much money to begin with.

BUT: the food is really excellent, veggie and vegetarian, but "normals" wouldn't taste a difference. meaty and delicious, crispy salad, perhaps one of the best burgers i've EVER had, at least in europe.

and here's some inside information: sam used to work at the legendary bio.k-restaurant, so that's where the expertise comes from. and the tempeh-sandwiches!

this place is in its kinderschuhe, yet well on its way to becoming one of the hottest tips in vienna i'd say.
