Pizzeria-Restaurant Loch Ness - (2/5)

The only Egyptian-owned pizzeria named after a Scottish lake monster has recently changed both ownership and name. The Loch Ness is now called the "Sun City" and serves both Pizza and Curry. The curries are OK (though they don't sell many so most of them are reheated out of the fridge) but the Egyptian pizza was definitely better than the Indian variation. The beer has also changed to some off-brand Slovak pish, served at room temperature.Despite the changes, the pizzeria formerly known as the Loch Ness is still frequented by the tradition-bound members of the Vienna Pipes and Drums, a group of unmusical alcoholics so desperate to associate themselves with anything even vaguely Scottish that they have been coming here every week for almost a decade to complain about the food.

Really nice atmosphere, good coffee and a pleasant summer terrace overlooking the Mariahilf church square. Can't agree on the food though, anything more complex than toast or a schnitzel seems to be a challenge for the kitchen. On our last visit the beiried was like an old boot and the fish ragout came slathered in what looked and tasted like some kind of industrial lubricant. However, as this is Vienna, this passed for a good 3 star meal.

Very good Szechuan restaurant. Popular with Chinese locals and tourists, which is a good sign. Service can be a bit slow, but everything seems fresh so it is worth waiting. Some dishes can be glutinous and a bit heavy on the oil. Excellent by Austrian standards, reservations recommended. As with all Szechuan, the food can be deceptively spicy, especially the morning after. The expression "arse like a bullet wound" springs to mind. Not the best place to go the night before a big meeting.

Curry Insel - (4/5)

Excellent Sri Lankan curry house. Reservation needed at weekends. The best thing to do is to buy 4-5 of the little curries, dahls etc. and combine with an assortment of sides like the hoppers and thosai. For chilli-addicts, a couple of the chutneys are pretty hot and a little bowl of the sambal will add heat to anything. Quality seems to have declined a little in the last year but still great.

Tholl Thai - (4/5)

One of the best and most authentic Thai restaurants in Vienna. Tholl is a tiny, spotlessly clean restaurant run by a friendly and enthusiastic Austrian. Only about 6 tables so booking advised, although it does not seem that well-known. For once in Austria the spicy stuff is really spicy - these are marked in the menu with 3 chillies for the safety of the Warmduschers. Recommend the spicy beef curry made with really tender bits of boiled beef, and the chicken satay starters.

Fresco Grill - (4/5)

Good Tex-Mex, maybe the best in Wien. Staff are friendly and helpful. I don't see this sort of smiling, professional customer service catching on in Austria but you have to admire the Fresco for trying it.The food is generally good and is made with fresh ingredients, but as someone says below they have no hot salsas ("scharf" is just a scattering of watery jalapeno slices) and the meat is not very spicy. If you like your burritos to cause fiery colon damage then these might be a bit disappointing. If you ask for rice then most of the burrito ends up stuffed with it so avoid that. The beer is pricey - 3.80 for a wee bottle of Corona is just cheeky. Better to buy a couple of burritos as a takeaway, and take them to Freud Park with a 6-pack of cold ones from the Spar down the road.

Naked Lunch - CLOSED - (4/5)

Cracking UK-style sandwiches with loads of trimmings - chicken with stuffing and cranberry, proper roast beef, pork belly...sandwiches likes this could be Britain's greatest export to Austria. Totally overpriced (almost 5 euros each) but I don't know anywhere else doing sandwiches like this in Vienna. A lot better than a dried-up cheese semmel from Anker.

Horrendous. Inedible food, bad music, slow dopey staff and an interior that smells like a tramp's trousers. Any restaurant that serves its specialities in greasy shovels and wheelbarrows (sadly not a joke) can't be taken seriously. To make matters worse it is taking up a great sunny location on Porzellangasse.Centimeter is what pubs will be like in hell.

Small Italian restaurant with really excellent pizza - especially the "Mafiosi" with chilli and meatballs.
Outstanding curry house serving north Indian cuisine. They will serve your curry UK-spicy if you ask, though you might have to assure them you are not Austrian ;). The lamb dishes are particularly good.It can be hard to get a table and the quality declines a bit when they are busy, but still one of the best curries to be had in Vienna.

Lemon Green - (1/5)

Really disappointing. The interior is pleasant enough but the food was awful. Leathery satay chicken, day-old overcooked sushi rice, sulphurous mottled omelette, and (worst of all) old, tasteless fish in the sushi and sashimi. The red tuna was obviously leftovers from a day or two before and was gritty and falling apart. Nauseating and dangerous for the health. I left most of my meal untouched. The only good part of the meal was the Gyoza.Even worse than Akakiko, and that is saying something.
