Closed Art of Life - CLOSED
Stubenring 14
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 13. Dec 2006

One of Vienna's fine gourmet vegetarian / vegan restaurants with cafe-style decor, daily menus and usually quite helpful staff.

In the summertime you can get several flavors of vegetarian / vegan ice-cream on vegan sugar cones or in cups! Hot damn. I think the ice-cream is from Schillinger, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The thing that troubles me is that they call themselves a vegetarian / vegan restaurant, but they have fish menus. Err, it's a bit odd to walk into a supposedly non-meat restaurant to be greeted with the stench of frying fish meat.

Great vegetarian restaurant in the heart of Wien's first district.

Service was quick, friendly and extremely casual and the food absolutely brilliant.

Starter was a super fresh and delicious portion of bruschetta, featuring a homemade sauce and smoked tofu topped with soy cheese, followed by a main dish of fresh vegetables covered in margarine and herbs, next to a unique rendition of cordon bleu, vegan-style, I left more than full and more than happy.

A bit on the pricey side, but it's absolutely worth it and what can you expect from a 1st district bio bar in the heart of Wien? Also, fun to spot local politician Madeleine Petrovich, whose family are the owners of the Bio Bar.

Maran is a major resource for vegans and vegetarians alike.

Other than stocking large amounts of tofu, vegan meats and cheeses, soy products, they also stock, get ready for this, Tofutti soy ice cream!

Their service is outstanding and with extremely helpful employees who seem genuinely interested in helping you find whatever your healthy little heart desires. No pimply-faced, gum-chewing robot teens here.

A very classy location, serving seasonal, all vegetarian and mostly vegan meals, all fresh, all bio and organic.

Their prices are a little higher, but, such is life when you are a gourmet vegetarian. The interior is beautiful, very modern and urban, making this a great location to bring your vegetarian blind date to. Hollerei also offers cooking courses, catering and buffets!

Was again at Landia and love it!

I can't say enough good things about Landia. For a high quality, healthy vegetarian (most items are vegan!) meal, prepared by a highly traveled and skilled chef who talks about the Sex Pistols, GBH and The Exploited (old 70s punk bands) while preparing your meal, I can't recommend anything better in Vienna at the moment.

Their fixed menu is finally rounding out, with the addition of their vegan doener kebap in vegan / kosher pita and their amazing zwiebel roastbraten w/ knoedel, and their homemade samosa w/ side-salad appetizer.

They've also hired new waiting staff to help from time to time, which is slowly improving the speed and quality of service. It's great to be served by the cook, chef and owners, but, sometimes they need the extra help.

I can't say enough good things about this place.

The owners, while a bit quirky, are quite hospitable and you can tell they take huge pride in their work and the business they are trying hard to build up.

Their menu is ever-changing, always made of high-quality organic ingredients and always served with a smile. Cheap however, it's not. Expect to shell out a premium for top of the line vegan meals, but, why even try and put a price tag on eating healthy.

Highly recommended are their fresh soups and definitely give their Kurbis-filled palatschinken a try, if you're lucky enough to go on a day when they are on the menu.

My one issue would be the atmosphere. While I'm all for feeling like I'm in a dirty beisl, the lighting is of the washed-out, retina-burning fluorescent variety, which makes me feel more like I'm eating in a government office waiting to be told I owe back taxes, rather than enjoying an evening meal in an organic, vegan restaurant in the middle of a hip European green district.

The vegan schnitzel, while not expected to please a meat-eater (why one even makes the effort to point out it's not the same as real meat is beyond me) is great in my ex-meat eaters point of view and tastes quite different from any of the other local veggie-schnitzels in the area. It could use some ketchup, but, it seems only American's think that way. Fatty and meat meat meat it's not, but then again, why go to a vegan restaurant if all you're going to do is end up complaining about the lack of anything resembling meat anyways?

Top-tip: Reserve a table in advance, it's completely packed every evening.

St.

Josef is my absolute favorite restaurant in Vienna. As Wolfgang D. says, the service is absolutely caring, the food always fresh and the atmosphere always warm and welcoming. The staff are wonderful, usually remembering you on your next visit.

A bit pricey, but well well worth it. Their schnitzel burgers are famous for being a great takeaway snack. Their salad bar is off the chain, featuring tons of extremely fresh salads and healthy dishes to pile onto your plate.

Also, their store is connected to their restaurant, so, all you have to do is eat a nice meal, pay (you can even pay AFTER you eat, how's that for respecting your clientèle?) , then walk over to the store and buy what you need for dinner. I'd give it 6-stars if I could!

Charlotte, NC 28203

Reviewed 19. Sep 2007

A legend among Charlotte-area veggie/vegans, Talley's grocery is one of the best locations in the Queen City for finding everything a health-conscious eater can desire.

From every type of Gardenburger variety you can imagine, to a frozen foods section which takes up a whole wall, full of hard to find vegan food varieties.

Talley's also has a very large deli, which has daily vegetarian and meat-mouth lunch specials, a large salad bar and some damn good vegan chocolate chip cookies which are about the size of a small child's head. Eat-in or takeaway, you can always grab the daily special for lunch, then take 10 steps and buy the ingredients fresh so you can cook it at home.
