Amoeba isn't considered the best record store in the country (planet?
) for nothing. Built inside of an old bowling alley, Amoeba SF is a vinyl lovers dream, stocking the hottest collection of punk, indie and hardcore vinyl in one giant room about about explode with independent music.
Also featuring a large DVD and book selection, Amoeba is the king, queen and court of independent record stores in the US and should be the first stop on any touring band or music lovers itinerary when in San Fran.

What more can be said about the Bottom of the Hill?
Practically every band that's ever meant anything has played this legendary club and pretty much ever kid growing up in indie music has drooled over their show listings.

A traditional British pub in sunny Miami, Churchill's has stood it's ground for many years as the premier spot for a lager and to catch some of the most obscure bands from all across the spectrum perform live.
Some of the most memorable shows of my early adult life took place at Churchill's and for that it will always have a special place in my heart.

An absolute classic, where you'll run into everything from gutter punks to movie stars buying, selling and trading old and obscure vinyl, CDs, DVDs and who knows what else.
The service isn't stellar, but hey this isn't a Blockbuster Video, so if you want your hand held while trying to buy the latest Vice or Pitchfork recommendation, maybe you should stay away from Kim's.

Everything from indie rock to electronica to jazz to soul, Rave Up has everything you could ever need in one cramped and smoky shop.
The owners are absolutely amazing people who you can tell are fans of the music for years, not there to make a quick buck of the latest fad. The employees working there are a bit hit and miss, sometimes you'll get the snooty record snob who stares like you've just desecrated the vinyl gods, this is probably the closest shop in Vienna that brings back memories of High Fidelity but I love every minute of it.

The folks at Substance know their indie rock, which means you can trust them when you're in need of the newest vinyl from the US, or the latest Burn to Shine DVD.
Their prices aren't always the best, which is a negative, but their sale bins always has a gem or three if you're willing to look hard enough.

Since 1969 The Milestone has been Charlotte's connection for underground music.
Constantly shaping and reshaping itself under different owners, the stone has brought some of the most obscure punk, hardcore and noise to the sleepy Queen City and I've loved every minute of it.
From Fugazi to Texas is the Reason, much of my time growing up in and around Charlotte was spent in the Milestone. Let's hope it lasts another 38 years.

Some of the best punk and hardcore shows in Vienna have taken place at Tuewi and I've had the honor of being in attendance at a few.
As well as loud live music, they also have movie nights, meetings, solis, a small bar and usually some form of vegetarian meal on the menu.
Always a pleasure to step outside and hear a live band disturbing a posh upper-class / diplomats neighborhood.
