This BAWAG branch has a pretty nice cafe inside. To the best of my knowledge it does not have another name. It's a standard Viennese cafe, if a bit small. They serve some food too. Great for when Delia's is closed. It's perhaps the best-hidden cafe since TWA closed theirs.

They just happen to be opposite of my favorite cafe in all of Vienna :) (Not, not Centimeter :P)
Reviewed 20. May 2007
To get there: go in through the main entrance, then take a left and follow the lane.
They have an outside terrace which they close at some point, then another terrace which is in a courtyard and doesn't close. I didn't quite get the difference.
They have a limited choice of food, and for some reason they stop serving hot drinks after 9 PM, which is annoying when it's still a bit cold in the evening (like just now).
Reviewed 29. Oct 2008
The name might perhaps raise an eyebrow or two if you're not French, but the coffee is great.
They sell coffee, tea and the corresponding paraphernalia, including espresso machines and coffee mills. I was just here around lunch time and noticed a line of people waiting for coffee to go. I joined in to find out why. You can get one of two kinds of coffee for 1 Euro 30, as well as tea and hot cocoa. This is served with a chocolate and a tiny muffin. The lady making the coffee was super-cheerful. The coffee was very, very good - about as good as in Rome, I'd say. Definitely a good place to go.

I've been here now and then over the years, and usually liked it.
However, I just went there for breakfast and had the WORST ham and eggs I have ever seen in my life. I couldn't get something as bad as this foul-tasting, meat-resembling product if I went to the cheapest supermarket in Vienna.
Service was slow and surly too, but well, that's normal in Viennese cafes.

If you like classical Viennese Kaffeehaeuser, this is a pretty good one.
Exquisitly grumpy waiters, just the right degree of runtergekommenheit, Apfelstrudel. The only surprise was that the coffee was actually decent.
Reviewed 02. Apr 2007
I was here a few days ago with some friends.
It looks more glamorous from far off than close up. It was all a bit mediocre: decor, service, coffee. The place felt cramped and uncozy, and it smelled bad.

I can't believe I didn't already write a review for this place.
(Seriously, I could've sworn I had done so.)
Anyway. Nice, traditional Viennese cafe. With this I mean: unlike most traditional Viennese cafes, it's nice (*shakes fist at Prueckl and Sperl and their ilk*). Good food, decent coffee, decent service, nice ambience, good location, terrace in summer.
Right next to Haydn - a good place to meet before a movie. Also a good place to chat for 4 hours or more, something I have done here on several occasions.
Try the steak toast.
Reviewed 30. Apr 2007
It's not cheap, but the ambience, service and especially the Sachertorte are worth it.
If paying 3 Euro for a small espresso or 4 Euro for a cup of tea doesn't spoil your mood, go there to taste the original Sacher cake - it really tastes better. Because it's a tourist attraction you can enjoy the fancy surroundings without having to dress for it.

BLEURGH!
I'd been here back in 2001/2, when it was still called Maria's Cantinas, and remembered it as being unexciting but decent Tex-Mex food, a la Mas or Pancho, if nowhere near Jalisco or Tacos Lopez.
The food we got here tonight was terrible. Bad ingredients, shoddily prepared and arranged. The jalapeno slices on the nachos had a bad aftertaste and the refried beans were a thin, weird, reddish paste at the bottom of the plate. The enchillada de pollo was terrible: it was so soggy that it was almost like eating a thin stew wrapped in a tortilla, half-covered by garlic sauce. I don't consider myself a great cook but I can make better enchilladas at home, and most cafes in Vienna serve a better club sandwich than the one my girlfriend had.
I was unable to hide the truth from the waiter, who did not seem all that surprised, but offered me an averna on the house. He had one himself as well, and downed it in one shot.

Relatively small but nicely decorated cafe.
It's modern architecture (none of that 'pay us more because we haven't changed our interior for 50 years' crap here), but cozy. They have pretty good coffee, hot chocolate, drinks, and small snacks. They are #1 in Vienna for most elaborate fringe benefits added to your coffee: they once served it to me with a raspberry in an ice cube in the glass of water, and a small bowl of whipped cream on the side. And they are great for spending time between picking up your reserved tickets and going to see a movie at Artis. Oh, nice terrace in summer too.

Anyone expecting a high class dining experience anywhere near the Prater is in for a rough ride, but come to this place with the right expectations and it's OK.

Just had dessert here tonight, first time I'd been there.
I was the only one wearing a T-shirt in the place, and I was probably the first person ever to go in there wearing a T-shirt referencing table-top RPGs (I win!).
The waitress was a bit difficult about reservations - she was basically keeping a lot of tables free 'in case a large group would show up'. There was no indication of when these tables would be needed. Meh. No clue if I could have gotten that table outside if I'd been wearing a suit.
Me and my companion ended up in the bar, which smelled a tad too much of cigar for my taste. We had a very nice creme brulee. Of course it'd better be nice for 9,50 Euro.
The interior is great, but the men's room is small and has a large mirror covering one entire wall. This can be a bit... awkward.

Dude, I would tell you about one 'intimate crowd experience' I had at Flex but this is a family website.
That one Kruder & Dorfmeister concert was the fullest place I've ever been in in my life - it even beat that night in the basement at Maria's Cantinas, with the 500 other people, and the fire act... I digress.
So, um, yeah, usually it is not that full, and the sound is teh awesome. It's best to go in summer because you can drink outside, you can watch the sun come up after you are done dancing, and you don't need a coat (it once took me 30 minutes to get my coat from the coat check). Don't wear fancy clothes because no-one will be able to see them, they will get dirty, and you will stick out like a sore thumb among the punk / goth teenagers.

I haven't been there in ages, but I used to go once a week.
Floridita is one of the top salsa places in Vienna. If you want to catch a Latin vibe in Vienna, you can't go wrong here. If you want to see fancy LA-style salsa moves, run don't walk. There are also many good opportunities for learning salsa, from beginners' courses to expert workshops. The drinks aren't cheap though. And your face may end up on some dumb Viennese party scene website.

Went here again last night.
The service was excellent, the guy running the non-smoking section (at least, on weekdays) has one of the best attitudes for a waiter I've seen in Vienna. The food was good, not great. Don't hold back and order your steaks rare - medium-rare won't get you the blood. The fries were too salty, but apart from that I had no complaints.
The non-smoking section is a courtyard lit by daylight (it didn't used to be part of the restaurant proper). I personally prefer the interior, looks-wise, and their air conditioning, is quite good so you can hardly tell it's the smoking section. I may sit there next time.
I forgot to mention they do excellent Thanksgiving dinners, both on Thanksgiving Thursday and on the Friday after that.

What can I say? The food was good but not mind-blowing. The decor was trendy and sleek but not more so than in other places. The service was competent but far from the best I've ever seen.
The problem is this place is so over-hyped. Kim is a mistress of self-promotion. I don't really keep up to date with what is hot or not, but even I knew about this place. So inevitably your expectations are sky-high. In the end, the experience is more about celebrity than about food.

Still skeptical.
Lacklustre staff, long lines at times. Yesterday, staff-person 1 ran off in panic after being asked for coffee. Staff-person 2 thought "mocca was with milk". (OK, why the lady in front of me ordered a mocca in an Italian place I don't know, but still.) Coffee was baseline Illy quality - they'd have to make an effort to make it taste worse. But I would appreciate them making an effort to make it taste better.
Today, seduced by the huge signs saying "PANINI", I wanted a panini. Only, they don't have paninis... I asked the semi-motivated staff-lady qho said "We have ciabattas". OK, can you heat those?, I asked, figuring that was their idea of a panini. "Sure, if you want," and nuked the ciabatta of my choice in a microwave, instead of in a panini toaster. Soggy. Still, ingredients are nice. For Vienna these are actually decent sandwiches.

We wanted to go to Figlmueller, but both of them had tourists standing in line.
I had a schnitzel, my companion had a steak. The steak was excellent, the schnitzel was nice but it just ain't the same without some mayonnaisesalat - even the best schnitzel just becomes dry and boring on it's own if you ask me.
Service was good if not great. The whole place feels more touristy than other, um, touristy restaurants. Partially this was because, well, it's full of tourists. Partially it's the incessant selling of those damn cookbooks. I own a copy, quit shoving it in my face already.

Some people don't like it, but I do. Cute interior decoration, attractive wait staff, good food for a decent price, and a killer cocktail bar in the basement. What else does one want?
The only thing I could complain about is their supercomplex menu with various groups of dishes coming on- and offline at certain times. I once managed to be in the 60 minute time window where there was, basically, no food. But meh, it's pretty rare.

Last night we wanted Chinese food (as opposed to Asian) and so we went to Tsing Tao, as we'd heard rumors that this restaurant was often filled with Chinese people.
Sadly, I found the 18 Euro dim sum menu very disappointing. The soup was the slimiest I have ever eaten in a Chinese restaurant (and that's saying something). Then there were 4 or 5 courses of salty, meaty, _things_, either wrapped in sticky dough or greasy batter. After 2 courses I was dying for a vegetable, even eyeing the limp bits of lettuce used as garnish as I heard my arteries slowly clogging. Dessert was, alas, not steamed, but something sweet, covered in greasy batter, and fried. If I want that kind of thing, I can go to an Austrian restaurant.
The waiters were nice, although it took them quite a while before they took the hint and removed the barely eaten final courses.
