Closed Akakiko
Mariahilfer Straße 40
1070 Vienna

Reviewed 01. Jun 2007

Lets face it: Akakiko is McDonald's in Japanese.

And as MecDonald's it is not cheap for what you get. As compared to other - good! - sushi places, you pay at least the same amount for some maki not even correctly done (the nori-sheets always are amiss at the maki's bottom).

If its your first time trying sushi, go somewhere else. If you are a sushi-veteran, go somewhere else. If you are a sushi-lover, avoid at all costs.

Closed Barbaresso
Seilerstätte 17
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 07. Jun 2007

Barbaresso offers Asian/Mediterranean fusion cuisine dishes that are very good indeed.

At lunchtime, you may choose between 5 different kinds of set menus each day featuring soup, main dish (e.g. pizza of the day) and always the same dessert (some sort of cake).

The ala carte prices are a little above average (however, set menus range between EUR 6.90 and EUR 7.50, which is quite common in Vienna).

The interior design is not Asian-styled at all but rather a bit of "I have seen this kind of wannabe up-market look many times before".

Whilst the food is rock solid, the service is not. It takes ages before the feast may start. Subsequently, it takes ages to get your bill.
Even if you virtually are the only patron.

Thus, I award Barbaresso 2 stars in total, 4 for the food and -2 for the crappy service.

Outside seating available.

Closed Billabong
Parkring 4
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 02. Jul 2007

Billabong is - unsurprisingly - a water- respectively drinkinghole.

I have spent many nights at this place and one beer followed the other. Whilst not having the same range of selection as Crossfields, Billabong is a nice place that reminds me of the upper-class (but not high-class) bars around Sydney's Circular Quay and Darling Harbour.

Friendly staff, hoewever no Aussies at all, but rather coming from different countries all over Europe (which is quite Aussie too).

Good food (especially the Burgers and the Surf&Turf), a mediocre selection of Aussie beers (Fosters, XXXX and VB). Prices are overall OK, given the daily specials at lunchtime (Thursday = Burgers Day e.g.).

Recently, Billabong has extended its multimedia capabilities and now shows different sports channels via one big screen and 4 to 5 flat-TV-sets.

You may watch Cricket and Rugby there, if you really want to. Soccer, of course, is shown almost everyday, be it the Austrian Bundesliga or any other league, thanks to satellite pay TV.

Furthermore, Billabong offers some Aussie-style events, most notably Trivia-Nights.

A big plus is the location right next to the U3 station "Stubenring/Dr. Karl Lueger Platz".

Closed Bunkerei
Obere Augartenstraße 1a
1020 Vienna

Reviewed 01. Jun 2007

Bunkerei apparently is something for your perfect "I got a family, kids, a dog and a tiny house with a nice fence" life during daytime but changes into a somewhat nice and easy bar/restaurant targeting more or less alternative-styled people aged 20 to 30 at night.

So you might want to avoid Bunkerei at all costs before 8.00 pm, like me, or take your kids and their friends down to Bunkerei to, well, whatver kids do (rot?).

Menu and Drinks are nothing special at all; the prices are above average.

Outside seating available.

All in all: if you miss Bunkerei, you have lots of other reasons to live (and to die) for. Definitely not a must, but solid.

Closed Cafe Engländer
Postgasse (1. Bezirk) 2
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 01. Jun 2007

Cafe Engländer is a safe bet.

Even though their menu is limited (only two set meals per day, one vegetarian and one with the real stuff and some a la carte dishes like Weisswurst and Gulasch), the set meals are always (I repeat: always) extremely tasty and remind you of upper-upper class meals, however coming at a low price (EUR 6.90 to 7.90 for soup and main dish, EUR 7.50 to 8.50 plus dessert).

The staff is always good for a laugh and very friendly; however, they might be biased towards my crowd as we regularly go there and are clearly identified as lawyers coming from big law firms.

Cafe Engländer is always crowded at lunchtime. If you plan to go with a crowd of 4 or more, be sure to place a reservation 2 hours ahead.

Whilst the food is delivered quickly in most cases, sometimes they will forget your order. Sometimes, they will make you wait for ages before you get the bill.

Even despite these downsides, Cafe Engländer should not be left out in any case.

Edit: I just realised that Cafe Engländer has a special menu for the evening which is much more packed than the lunch menu. The prices in the evening, however, range from OK to pricey indeed. I haven't been there in the evening yet.

Closed Crossfields
Maysedergasse 5
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 31. May 2007

Crossfields makes me miss my time in Australia.

Whilst having much mumbo-jumbo on the walls on the first floor(like a stuffed crocodile, a stuffed wallaby and the infamous aussie roadsigns) and the cellar designed like an opal mine, Crossfields equally delivers good burgers and carrys a good selection of Aussie beers as well.

As one of Vienna's "true" Aussie pubs, Crossfields pleasantly does not stick to the usual Fosters and XXXX selection, but equally offers VB (Victoria), Tooheys New (New South Wales), Crown Lager, Ayer's Rock Red (probably from the Northern Territory, even though the rock should not be called Ayers Rock but rather Uluru) and many more. They even carry Bundaberg Rum!

The food is good, but rather costly and definitely not outstanding; if you are adventurous, you can go for the fried grasshoppers.

A big plus is that the staff comprises genuine Aussies and not only some Scottish/Irish folks pretending to be from OZ.

If you want to breathe Aussie air, Crossfields is the spot for you, if a little exaggerated though.

PS: The name crossfields is a literal translation of the owner's family surname "Kreuzfeld".

Closed da moritz
Schellinggasse 6
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 03. Jun 2007

da moritz is the Italian spin off of "Huth", a very decent restaurant offering up-market decent Vienna cuisine right across the street (see separate review).

If you believe that the decent cuisine of the "Huth" is also present at da moritz "in Italian", you will be disappointed; however, da moritz is a bit more expensive.

The staff is incompetent and especially unable to handle the truffles correctly. As da moritz charges truffles per gram, it basically is a wise idea to use a scale before and after your dish is "truffled-up". However, the waitress failed miserably in every aspect.

Besides, last time I went there (in October 2006), the truffles were shallow indeed. No smell, little flavor. Definitely not worth the money spent.

The interior is up-market, designer-styled and a bit cold. However, as already indicated, the food does not match the looks of da moritz.

da moritz could have been a nice place, if it wasn't for the food: the dishes look special, but their taste is shallow. As for this, da moritz is way too expensive for what it offers, or better said: delivers.

Go there to impress your future mother-in-law, but only if invited.

Closed Dino's American Bar
Salzgries 19
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 01. Jul 2007

If you are into cocktails, long-drinks or pure spirits, Dino's undoubtedly is your place.

Whilst it looks somewhat posh and classy, it still has got no dress code whatsoever. You may go there in your suit after work or join fellow connaisseurs in your short baggy pants, T-Shirt and sneakers.

Dino's for sure offers the best drinks in Vienna. Not only is Heinz, one of the bartenders in charge, a genuine pharmacist, but equally he knows how to mix and to create drinks subject to prescription only by head physicians.

If you feel that you have tasted through the drinks-menu already, its no problem to ask Heinz (or any other bartender except for the apprentices) to create a new drink tailored to your taste. It is of course possible to order specific ingredients, such as specifying the vodka of your choice to be added to the "Liason Dangereuse" (see below).

Furthermore, Dino's carries Vienna's biggest line-up of whiskeys.

The overall selection is great: from Russky Standard Imperia to Don Giulio Tequila, Dino's carrys not only exotic, but also the finest brands in liqueur.

The prices are OK; Dino's delivers the goods, but they come at a price. Expect to pay approx 8.00 for the standard drinks and between EUR 11 to EUR 15 for custom-made ratios.

Be sure to grab a "Liason Dangereuse" consisting of Lemon-Grass-Liqueur, Vodka and Absinth. Tasty, indeed!

PS: The staff is _very_ friendly and always good for a laugh. Not surprisingly, they play a lot of Dean Martin's songs since the name of this bar is derived from this Hollywood movie star.

PPS: You _have_ to try the following drinks (they are my absolute favourites; be prepared, however, to dash out 50 EUR and be sure not to drive home in a driver's seat):

1.: Liason Dangereuse (I am very proud that this drink was created for me and me alone. Tastes lemon-grassy).

2.: Gimlet Caprese. This will absolutely hit your taste bulbs; mozarella, balsamico, vodka and more. Sounds completely out of bounds, but this is the rising star in cocktails worldwide, and a lease therefore a definite MUST HAVE.

3.: Shogun. Ginger, cucumber, Wasabi. Japanese style all over.

4.: Papadam Martini. Ok, this one is a bit rough as it tastes like - surprise! - papadam. Genuine huge peppercorn inside.

Closed Fabios
Tuchlauben 6
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 25. Aug 2008

Yeah, for sure you would have gotten the table if you were wearing a suit or reserved upfront.

I know what I am talking about since Fabios is a par excellance example for an upmarket joint where style matters. The food was great when they opened back in 2004 or so, but last time (August 2008), I was plainly disappointed.

Whilst the prices are very upmarket, the quality/taste ratio is way below and no match for Meinl am Graben (at Fabios, expect to pay between 18 EUR for some pasta and EUR 36+ for other main courses like Steak, guinea fowl filet or EUR 25 for octopus pasta). Last time, I dashed out EUR 77 plus 10% tip for me and a girl, two main courses, 1 desert, a bottle of water and a handle of beer.

At Meinl am Graben you may get better food at the same price (however, you can easily dash out EUR 250 pp at Meinl am Graben as well).

The deserts, however, are high quality and beautifully crafted. Meinl am Graben tops them easily though.

The selection of wines is very appropriate for a place like this. Topped, of course, by Meinl am Graben.

All in all: Fabios is a good place if you want to make an impression on your (next) girlfriend. It is very stylish. The staff is state-of-the-art friendly, helpful and competent. Furthermore, it's a good place for having a coffee outside, if you want to be seen there, of course.

When it opened, Fabios was a rising star. I would have given it 4 stars. However, quality of the main courses continuously declined. This makes 2 stars. Do not get me wrong: It's good. But nowadays, quality does not match the price anymore. If you want to enjoy decent food at somewhat the same price levels, go to Meinl am Graben. If you want to impress some young girl, go to Fabios.

In any case: place a reservation, so you do not have to bother about the fake "ah no, ALL tables are reserved" bollocks. Or, wear a suit or at least some gear from "Etro".

Closed Huth
Schellinggasse 5
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 03. Jun 2007

Huth is an upper market restaurant offering Austrian/Vienna plain fare ("Hausmannskost") at a very high level.

Prices are well above average in all aspects since you have to add a cover charge of EUR 2,20 in any case; however, you get three kinds of bread and decent spreads in exchange.

Every dish is decent at Huth, my favourites definitely being the "geröstete Kalbsleber mit Erdäpfelpürree" and the "Faschierte Laberl mit Erdäpfelpürree und kleinem Salat" as well as the "Erdäpfel-Vogersalat mit Speckkrusterl und Kernöl" as starter.

Expect to pay EUR 18,00 to 22,00 per person, including drinks and tip, if you aim low. If you go for the whole 9 yards (starter, entree, main course, dessert and wine), EUR 40,00 per person are easily spent at Huth.

The staff is genuine Vienna-style, meaning: the staff is the boss, and you are not.

If you want to try/taste original Vienna cuisine at a very high level and want to experience genuine Viennese "hospitality", go to Huth. Now!

Outside seating available; the Italian offset of the Huth (i.e. "da moritz") is right across the street; however, "da moritz" was disappointing to me on three out of four occasions (see separate review), so you might want to stick to Huth.

Li-Du definitely is something special if you are able to do more but merely scratch on its surface.

Whilst looking like a standard Chinese restaurant like 1 gazillion others, the real deals are to be found off the menu, except for the tasty noodle soups:

Go for some genuine Taiwan styled Gun Bao (extremely hot due to - uncounted - 50+ chillies burnt to death).

Or choose the Li-Du's prime dish: noodle soup (with pork, duck or just veggies. Recently, a spicy beef soup has been added to the range of soups; just take a look at numbers 91 et sequ on the menu).

Or be brave and choose to just ask for the recommendation of the Li-Du's chief-waitress.

Closed Louisiana Blues Pub
Prinz-Eugen-straße 4
1040 Vienna

Reviewed 18. Dec 2008

The Louisiana Blues Pub: It's small.

No, it's tiny. 5 tables, one bar. Room for about 30 people at best. They do, hoewever, get the place really crowded AND pack

2 guitarists

1 bassist

1 harmonica player

1 saxophonist

1 singer

1 percussionist

into the place. And this goes like this: The starting line up consists of 2 guitarists (one electric and one accoustic,), one of them also singing, 1 bassist and the percussionist. Then, spontaneously, people from the audience unpack some instruments, like a harmonica, and join the band, playing at the spot wherever they just happen to be. And yes, all of the musicians know each other and I am sure that they have extensively played together before.

And they involve the crowd. This set-up furthermore makes you feel to be a part of the music/performance. You do not simply watch/listen, but you are in the middle of it (as the musicians might be scattered around the tiny place).

The music was good. VERY good indeed. This not only goes to the rock solid interpretation skills of the bands of evergreen blues tunes (on Wednesday, I believe always the same guys are playing), but - oddly enough - to the perfect technical sound quality (I've seen super-professional venues where tehy entirely fucked up the sound set-up, just remember Ladytron in the Gasometer).

Whilst they do have a menu, they are often out of stock of certain platters (or nearly all of them). So I would not call the Louisiana Blues Pub a restaurant (like the previous tag suggested). It does not read "Pub" for nothing. And, most certainly, this place is what it says it is: A real Blues Pub that might have been teleported directly from Louisiana to Vienna.

Friendly staff (there is only Claudio, the waiter).

Go there, ideally on Wednesday!

Closed Meinl am Graben
Graben 19
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 03. Jun 2007

Well, Meinl am Graben is _the_ restaurant in Vienna and as far as I recall the only one having been awarded three bonnets respectively 18/20 points by Gault-Millau.

For restaurants scoring more bonnets, you have to go outside of Vienna (e.g. to Liesl Wagner Bachner in Mautern/Wachau).

As regards Meinl am Graben, you can be sure to get the most decent food at the highest prices of/in Vienna.

Needless to say, the staff is very friendly (and helpful with the wine menu), but this really is not surprising given the fact that you easily can dash out EUR 100,00 per person, the lowest limit being approx EUR 25,00 (but then you virtually do not get anything from Meinl's pristine cuisine).

Be warned: The prices are not for the faint hearted. Paying a visit to your bank with lots of guns before spending it all at Meinl's may help.

If you plan to sample the most prestigious restaurant in Vienna, be sure to reserve way ahead, lets say 2 to 3 weeks.

If you are not into luxury meals, you equally may upgrade your home supplies by indulging into Meinl's marvelous delicacy shop at the same address featuring not only stuff from all over the world, such as

(i) Vegemite (finally!),

(ii) mineral water from South Africa, Japan, and where ever you can imagine or

(iii) the finest caviar and champagne, but also

(iv) every day stuff you are used to find in any supermarket (however, expect to pay at least a "surcharge" of EUR 0,50 for all items as compared to local supermarket prices!).

The delicacy stores expands over two floors; the entrance to the restaurant is located at the second floor right behind the candy-bar.

In the fish-section on the second floor of the shop (not in the restaurant), you may equally taste very fine sushi, coming, however, at a higher price (approx plus EUR 3,00) as compared to other sushi places delivering the same - or even better - quality, such as "En".

Meinl is an experience in any case, even if you just skim through the shop and don't buy anything. If you are in Vienna and have not/never paid a visit to Meinl, be it restaurant or shop, you definitely should go there at all costs once.

Tip of the day (and I will hate myself for giving it away): Buy some eccentric mineral water from whereever you like (ranging, no joke, from EUR 3,00 to EUR 9,00) and keep the bottles once emptied; you can easily refill them with good old Austrian water and impress your girl-friend(s) and/or your future mother-in-law with almost no effort. My favourite bottles are VOSS (Norwegian), Karoo (South Africa) and Finé (Japan).

Furthermore, they add some international connaisseur flair to your refridgerator.

I am not vegan, nor vegetarian.

I like meat. Lots of it. After paying a visit to Mondscheinstüberl, I feel pitty for you vegans. Whilst the schnitzel I had was quite OK, the starter (some filled zucchini) was well advertised by the staff but tasted rather bland. The Bio-Beer tasted bland as well; however, it did a good job as I felt a bit woozy after two of them. All in all, it all tasted bland.

Don't get me wrong: The staff is _very_ friendly and _very fast_. The dishes ought to be great from an exclusive vegan point of view.

So all meat-lovers who just want to try out vegan stuff should probably search elsewhere (Vegetasia is great in this respect, however, it serves Asian cuisine and Monscheinstüberl offers vegan Vienna-style dishes, so they are not comparable).

Besides: the place is grossly overpriced in my view for what it offers. Sure, "Bio" - like "Wellness" - costs extra, that is a default rule. At these prices, however, you might want to try Wrenkh instead (which equally offers only bland dishes, but is more up-market in terms of "style").

As a result, one star is enough. Please note that this is my very subjective opinion. Vegans actually might like the place. And yes, you are right. Dissing a great place like Monscheinstüberl as confessing meat-freak is like a heterosexual going to a gay party and dissing the crowd for being gay.

Seitenstettengasse 3
1010 Vienna

Reviewed 07. Jun 2007

Rasputin _was_ one of the best bars until the previous owner passed away in December 2005; they had 207 sorts of vodka, a fridge tailored to the needs of vodka conaisseurs cooling Russian beverages down to -14 degrees Celsius as well as an amazing selection of whiskeys, cigars and champagne.

Furthermore, they played Russian music.

Subsequently, his son-in-law took over the show, and as Tobe already mentioned, the former Rasputin is now called "non+ultra".

As regards the non+ultra, I believe that the new owner did not miss one single chance to drag the renowned Rasputin to the lowest "sad, sad bar level".

They still offer premium vodka, such as the Stolichnaya Elit, however the owner publicly admitted that he has no clue about vodka at all and therefore rather offers wine instead (thats why the former renowned name Rasputin could not be maintained... Just think of it: A bar called Rasputin focusing on wine instead of vodka? Come on!).

Closed Restaurant World
Hofferplatz 5
1160 Vienna

Reviewed 01. Jun 2007

The restaurant World is unique.

It does not serve the usual standard food, but rather concentrates on Caribbean/Asian/Ayurvedish dishes, 99% of them comprising various curries, the rest consisting of rice and papadam-bread-thingies.

World mainly offers an all-you-can-eat buffet (6 to 8 curries, rice, papadam, soup and a salad-bar) as well as one dish of the menu (i.e. the Kings Plate which I have not seen in real life though).

The curries are all heavily Caribbean-styled; there is no Indian curry or anything that would make you think of standard Asian food.

Some of the curries reminded me of "Yak+Yeti", i.e. a Nepalese/Tibetan restaurant; some of the Sri Lanka restaurant "Curry Isle"

All curries were tasty indeed. However, they were a bit to mild for my taste (even though spiced up with spicy sauce that equally was available).

The buffet charge is EUR 7,40. That is very cheap, especially for what you get!

A large beer costs 2,90. Again this is cheap.

The atmosphere is quite shallow; World comes equipped with standard more-or-less ikea furniture, but it has a nice but very very small Cuban-style bar with two bar-chairs as a highlight.

Outside seating available.

Really friendly staff/owner, apparently from the Caribbean.

All in all, Restaurant World is a nice place; if you a re in the neighborhood, give it a try, especially if you are backpacking in/through Vienna an look for a good bang for your buck.

However, its not the real "Go there now or you'll miss life" location as indicated by Mike below.

Reviewed 11. Oct 2008

Ok.

I live in Gasometer C. Segafredo Espresso is located right in the bridge crossing Gasometer D to the Gasometer Entertainment Center, commonly referred to as Gasometer E, whereas this Center is not a Gasometer whatsoever.

Segafredo is a faceless chain. It does not mean anything to me. It tries to stand for Italien coffee at high quality, but it fails. Why do I actually like this place, even though they play boring mainstream music and feature Fashion TV displayed at common 16:9 screens mounted in the common horizontal way fucking up the aspect ratio entirely?

It's really easy after all: The beer. And we are talking about standard Budweiser here. Whilst Budweiser ist one of the best (_best_) beers available in Austria, even despite great local brews such as Wieselburger Gold, Kapsreither and certainly Gösser, the Budweiser tastes _fucking_ _really_ _and I mean it_ _PERFECT_ at this very place.

It comes at the very right temperature. Very right indeed. I had lots of 'em in a lot of places worldwide. Even in Budwar. At the Budweiser's brewery.

However, nothing, and I repeat: NOTHING, matched the taste as experienced right here, right now. I always neglected Segafredo Espresso in this "GAsometer Bridge". I passed by on my way to the ATM, the Cinema or the Bierometer (which unsurprisingly is a joint focussing on beer and its complementary food and is a good joint overall).

However, one day, I went to Bierometer which always delivers the "Hausmannskost" Vienna quality at a very very solid level but got disturbed - sorry: freaked out - by construction noise.

I therefore checked in at Segafredo Espresso, located just 30 secs away. And had a beer.

This is my 5th time here. Because of the very best Budweiser they deliver. The very best Budweiser one can deliver. The music, the lighting, everything that I despise in regard to this place does not matter anymore. When I got my Budweiser at this temperature.

Served by friendly, no: very friendly staff.

And they got free WLAN. too. I really enjoy sitting here, drinking my Budweiser, surfing the web and writing this review. This is how it should be. A quality that overrules your prejudices. Some kind of home. Some kind of "never tasted before".

And as I sit here, I really wonder why the Budweiser served here tastes better than it tastes at all other places worldwide, including the very own brewery. I am simply baffled.

So this review comes from my very heart.
