Closed da moritz

da moritz is the Italian spin off of "Huth", a very decent restaurant offering up-market decent Vienna cuisine right across the street (see separate review).

If you believe that the decent cuisine of the "Huth" is also present at da moritz "in Italian", you will be disappointed; however, da moritz is a bit more expensive.

The staff is incompetent and especially unable to handle the truffles correctly. As da moritz charges truffles per gram, it basically is a wise idea to use a scale before and after your dish is "truffled-up". However, the waitress failed miserably in every aspect.

Besides, last time I went there (in October 2006), the truffles were shallow indeed. No smell, little flavor. Definitely not worth the money spent.

The interior is up-market, designer-styled and a bit cold. However, as already indicated, the food does not match the looks of da moritz.

da moritz could have been a nice place, if it wasn't for the food: the dishes look special, but their taste is shallow. As for this, da moritz is way too expensive for what it offers, or better said: delivers.

Go there to impress your future mother-in-law, but only if invited.

Huth is an upper market restaurant offering Austrian/Vienna plain fare ("Hausmannskost") at a very high level.

Prices are well above average in all aspects since you have to add a cover charge of EUR 2,20 in any case; however, you get three kinds of bread and decent spreads in exchange.

Every dish is decent at Huth, my favourites definitely being the "geröstete Kalbsleber mit Erdäpfelpürree" and the "Faschierte Laberl mit Erdäpfelpürree und kleinem Salat" as well as the "Erdäpfel-Vogersalat mit Speckkrusterl und Kernöl" as starter.

Expect to pay EUR 18,00 to 22,00 per person, including drinks and tip, if you aim low. If you go for the whole 9 yards (starter, entree, main course, dessert and wine), EUR 40,00 per person are easily spent at Huth.

The staff is genuine Vienna-style, meaning: the staff is the boss, and you are not.

If you want to try/taste original Vienna cuisine at a very high level and want to experience genuine Viennese "hospitality", go to Huth. Now!

Outside seating available; the Italian offset of the Huth (i.e. "da moritz") is right across the street; however, "da moritz" was disappointing to me on three out of four occasions (see separate review), so you might want to stick to Huth.
