Der Wiener Deewan Reviews (6)

I went there two days ago and was lucky to get a table.

Unfortunately the food wasn't as good as I had expected it from the former reviews. It was luke-warm, although refilled several times while I was there. I didn't like the red bean dal very much, the chicken curry was ok, but not really spicy. The ladyfinger curry was too oily and the potato curry (the menu read potato cauliflower curry, but no cauliflowers sighted) was ok. I love Indian food and Pakistani food is very similar, so I expected a lot more "flavor" and spices, but was disappointed, because the curries were quite bland. However, I paid 10€, because I had two plates (I was very hungry). The waitress was very nice, though and I liked that there is a can of tap water served for free.

the idea behind this place is really great i think also the food is quite ok (i think the curries are nothing special, reminds me on the food we get when we're touring with the band but the dessert is great!

) unfortunately it is way too crowded most of the time by now and the all you can pay policy sounds better than it is since some of my friends got bad comments from the staff for not paying enough...

A very cool idea for a buffet, eat all you want, but pay what you think it's worth, leaves one open to completely reinvent their dining experience.

Was the combination of food quality, service and experience good enough to warrant paying more than 5 euro for the buffet or should I pay a little more? In all honesty, yes, you should, but again, it's completely up to you, which is the point I'm trying to get across.

The curries are a piping hot (in temperature), the service is acceptable and the fact that I'm only paying full price for drinks is a great thing to remind yourself as your going back for your third of fourth plate of dahl masala.

I'd recommend reserving a table in the evening, but be sure to ask for a table on the first or second floor, the third floor, while cozy and charming, stinks of cigarette smoke, is as hot as a sauna thanks to the heat-pumping utility lamps they use and is usually packed full of cheap students who sit in the worst placed positions, effectively blocking your way to cheap curry nirvana.

Der Wiener Deewan is a restaurant with a different concept: There's a buffet of 5 different dishes, 2 of which are always vegan, and you eat what you like.

But not only that, you also PAY what you like. So if you're really hungry but only have a fiver in your pocket, head on over there. But be sure you come back another time to give them a tenner for the food! You get the idea.

Most people will class this as Indian food but the owners are actually from Pakistan as far as I know. It's delicious and by default rather mild. You can always add spicy sauce though.

Be careful, it can get quite busy at times.

Good food, pay whatever you want.... I don't have to say anymore. Even if you pay little you always receive a smile, great place.
