Been there
Phil Reviews (19)
A friend of mine started working there recently so I went there to visit him and check out the place.
It's a quite stylish café with a lots of books that you can read and buy. They don't offer a lot of food but what i had was very good. The Roggentoast was one of the best toasts i ever had. The falafel they get directly from naschmarkt and it was good as well. The chocolate/cherry cake i had afterwards was fresh and yummy =)
If you want to go somewhere to relax a bit and read a book, i strongly recommend going there.
Very comfortable place where literature meets Kaffehauskultur (oder so ähnlich).
The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. Loved the tea there.
read books for hours, buy scuffed furniture, do the decent breakfast one.
praedikat: nifty.
just don't smoke.
phil is a very cute cafè!
the prices are really fair, the coffee tastes very good and they pute cute little stars on the cappoccino :) .
you can either sit in cosey couches or outside, which is definitively a plus on hot summer days. there's a veriety of snacks to shoose from too.
what makes this place really special is the book-/music/-movie- store inside. you're allowed to grab a book and look at it while enjoying a drink. I thought that was totally cute. they have a very nice collection of stuff! very alternative, a lot of artsy books - really, really nice. you can also buy the whole furniture of that cafè.
a very chilled backplace, stylish, friendly, … - really nothing to complain about!
big recommendation, good music, good drinks, good food, nice people
Great books, great ambience, great coffee and great people all around.
They also run the philiale in the foyer of the Gartenbaukino, not quite as popular but they're getting there.
phil presents an inviting mix of bar/café, bookstore, record-store, furniture-shop and - judging from the number of macbooks hooked up to the free wifi - public office.
It excels at all of these. Great and friendly service and an audience that tends to be very approachable and open make this a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.
While non-smokers will find this to be one of the nicest hipster cafés in town, smokers may prefer the slightly less comfy "Möbel" (Burggasse), which has been similarly executing the bar/furniture-shop/wifi combo for a good while.
Imagine a bookshop/library combined with a vintage furniture shop, a record store, good coffee, decent snacks/breakfast, very friendly (and in most cases rather attractive) waitresses and waiters, good DJs, wifi and no smoking except for the outside tables.
What you get is basically the best place ever.
(As someone already mentioned on here it's more of an daytime sort of place though. It tends to get crowded in the evenings.)
The Phil, if not to crowded, is the place to have a "Schokobanane" and read a book from the places library.
Trendy, yet with the Viennese laid-back athmosphere of the classic "Kaffeehaus" (and the waitresses and waiters are polite in the Phil!)
Warning: The Phil can get REALLY crowded at "prime-time"
A new favorite!
Bobo cafe with relaxing atmosphere, friendly people, comfortable furniture and an impressive selection of funk and soul music. Walls are covered with purchasable books, LPs, lampshades. Smoking is forbidden inside (there are two dedicated spots outside), the reason for the fifth star :)
Recently turned into a non-smoker café, due to the books.
Breakfast is 'till 17:00.
Possibly the only café in Vienna that plays Sigur Rós, Boards of Canada and Trentemöller.
Wonderful location.
Starting the day with a "Philgut" breakfast is rather nice. Quality of the music selection varies from day to day, but is usually fine with really awesome tracks occasionally.
One of my favourite places.
A concept somewhat similar to Das Moebel, but they also have books and lps and lot of other stuff that make it friendlier, warmer and more cozy than moebel.
Free wlan (just ask for the password). Be sure to try Bionade Holunder, my favourite drink there.
