My favorite event location in Vienna: A former depot for theatre props and sceneries with several rentable gorgeous, wide-open spaces and a multi-level gallery.
The atmosphere is not pompous at all -- rather a little industrial-looking, maybe even with a hint of steampunk. If you're looking for a place to hold your workshop/conference/launch party/art performance, take a closer look at the Semper-Depot. And if there's an event happening here, make sure you go.
