Jazzkeller - (5/5)

What a cozy jazz club. The sound in this venue is great and not over powering for the size. My boyfriend is here in Frankfurt playing with the HR Big Band and some of the players from the band play in a quintet at the Jazzkeller once a month. They sound fantastic and the drinks are good. If you can look to see if Tony Lakatos and Axel Schlosser are playing they are members of the HR Big Band and are wonderful soloists and writers. A trip to the Jazzkeller for a music lover is a wonderful experience. If you come for the second set it may be quite crowded. Don't forget to bring Euros for cover charge, check the website for more information.

British Book Shop - (4/5)

This is a smart little British Book Shop that has travel guides for other European countries and dictionaries in English for language translation. They also have a variety of English periodicals, popular novels, children's books, cooking, and many others. The shop is quite small, but they have books stacked to the ceiling. From what I have heard you can order books from the UK or the US if you want them. They are open 9:30 to 19:00, Sat 9:30 to 18:00, closed Sun.

The prices are a lot more expensive than I am used to in LA, but it's American Apparel man! A little slice o home. Some of the best clothes, and you can buy knowing that you support a company that pays people a living wage --no sweatshop shit.

Maingold is a great cafe on Zeil, though it's usually packed. It usually frequented by a lot of students, and the sidewalk out front often looks like a bike sale. Cheap drinks, great atmosphere and people. Best to show up early or show up late.

Great spot for hessian cuisine with a twist. Dishes are prepared totally fresh and are hessian in nature. However, the cook is very creative with creating new recipes, such as Trüffelfikadellen, Blutwurstlasagne and other. Also, Apfelwein lovers get their fix here: Klabunt serves Geiselbacher Gold naturtrüb.

The kitchen can be somewhat slow.

Cafe upstairs, club downstairs. This venue is so tiny it would be hard to park two cars in it, but it snags the best indie acts that come through FFM. I saw Metric and Biff Naked here, the Metric show was one of the best concerts I have ever been to.

Cookys is one of those places that is the last open on a long night. I have ended up there once or twice and I really didn't like it much. It seems a run-of-the-mill R&B/pop 'club' in the basement of a building downtown.

The only reason I have ever heard to go there is because 'it's open'; that says something.
