The 3 Rs stand for reduce, reuse and recycle.
Eco-friendly home and life decor store in Park Slope that has the future generations in mind when picking the products they are selling. everything is fair trade and friendly to the planet.
all this watching out for the environment has its price, though.

Charming waitresses, pink-brown interior, cheap coffee and numerous locations all over town, that's Aida for you.
The cake is delicious, my favourite is their Apfelstrudel, so try a piece, why don't you?

you might not know this but this is not just a school but also houses a great collection of paintings from the 14th to 17th century.
the highlight is definitely The Last Judgment, the Hieronymus Bosch triptych. it's worth to just go there to check that big one out.

my go to spot when i don't know what to get on my lunch break.
japanese fast food in good quality. not really affordable but at least they have a card with a point system that gets you a few euros off eventually.

Tolle abwechslungsreiche Ausstellungen.
Recommended.

can i move in, please?
i unfortunately only spent a short time (and everything under an hour or two is too short!) in there, or should i say fortunately because in about 15 to 20 minutes i found 5 books plus i wanted to take home with me. i remembered my small carry on bag in time and left with a magazine, vegan cookbook and the latest Vonnegut collection (i miss the man!).
wonderful place with great funny staff and i cannot wait to get back.

bizarre & bad service the first time i went (for breakfast).
(see review below for the awkward details) besides the witnessed shouting match over scrambled eggs and toast, the food was good, then again, it's hard to mess up a bagel with Tofutti cream cheese and the place is cute and cosy. the second time I went, for a post-dinner tea the waitress was friendly and helpful, so it definitely seems to depend on when you are visiting and who is working.

cute tiny bakery filled with vegan, sugar free and most of all delicious baked goods.
it is hard to leave with just one cupcake and in only 5 days in the city I managed to swing by three times and was never disappointed with my choices. I loved the skinny buns, cookie sandwiches and the red velvet cupcake but wasn't too impressed with the brownie bites. service was friendly, the coffee was too watery but overall I adore babycakes for its great interior, cute staff and great vegan baked goods that cater to all that cannot or do not want to eat certain ingredients.

the staff's english isn't great but just look around you and ask for help, someone will be able to figure out what is vegan and what isn't. the cuisine is hearty and simple but filling and very cheap. a big plate of stew and grains costs 3 € and the day we went a great fruit salad was available.

here is why:
+the location is perfect for me, right around the corner basically
+it's inside of a bookstore, so i can grab some books and magazines and read for as long as i want to w/out having to buy the overpriced fashion magazines.
+they have soy milk, delicious soy milk, and their cafe latte is good and affordable
+vegan oreos were spotted and purchased there!
+the place is comfortable and stylish
-the staff is bored and unmotivated, sometimes overly chatty, though.
-i dislike chains

eclectick brings young hungarian fashion design to 1070.
bright colours, cartoonish cuteness on clothes for "boys and girls" (their words not mine), sizes seem to be on the smaller side, bags are mostly made from cloth and are very colourful and unique.
definitely for the people that are young at heart and their trendy toddlers and pets, yes, they also have coats for dogs. since i could live in jeans and black t-shirts all year around, this isn't really my style but if you like colours and sticking out in a crowd and have cartoon characters on your dress/shirt/pants, then you should stop by and check this store out for yourselves.
prices seem alright, accessories start at 2 Euro, bags are around 36 Euro.

pigging out on burgers, fries and smoothies without that "aw man, i shouldn't have eaten all of that grease" guilty feeling afterwards.
they don't fry their fries, they "airbake" them, salads and all ingredients actually are always fresh, choices for vegans are a-plenty.
this place attracts a good mix of health concious parents and hip punk rockers alike.
i am only holding back on the 5 stars because i am not a huge fan of the fact that this is in the middle of your typical huge mall, right next to all the other well-known burger/fast food joints. the smell of old grease from the scary red clown place is ever presents.

Guter Schanigarten.

I haven t actually been inside of this store but it still is one of my favourite spots in this city.
Gretl is the kind of place your grandmother or old aunt would go to to replace her good pair of shoes she bought back in the days. Here you can get all the clothes and accessories your inner spinster desires and slowly prepare for the wonderful years you will spend on a park bench feeding birds. lovely! speaking of lovely, Gretl also sells fine art, like, the late Lady Di's portrait.

i didn't expect much when i was invited to a nice dinner at this place but, boy, was i in for a surprise: this restaurant is amazing.
make sure to reserve ahead and when the weather allows it, definitely sit outside, across the street, by the church.
lots of real italians dine there which is always a good sign.
i had a pizza marinara with rucula. the dough was thin but not too thin, got crispy and not hard when it started to cool off, the sauce was delicious, and the rucula/arugula was fresh.
prices are affordable, definitely not cheap, though. what a great ristorante!
even the Ciao! the (not our) waiter yelled after us seemed sincere!

i do like their food, especially the chana masala and their nan is delicious.
their costumer service skills are non-existent, though. unfriendly on the phone, they are usually taking up to an hour to deliver and are known for bringing the wrong dish (vegans don't appreciate chicken at their door steps) or, and this made me actually delete their number from their phone book and never order from them again, they call you back and tell you they can't deliver your order after all. didn't you know that when i called with my order in the first place?

checked out this new all vegan joint in 1070.
- the location is central but strange: right on a stop light on Gürtel with nosy people gawking at you while you are eating.
- part of chain of restaurants that belongs to the Supreme Master (look her up, it's weird shit) which is a minus in my book b/c i dislike spirituality/ religion with my cake
- the food i tried so far is good, ok mix of austrian, asian and american cuisine; pasta, mock sea food, gluten schnitzel and more. great desserts (we got some free very delicious chocolate cake and zucchini cake with frosting). the smoothie was very expensive (3,90 EUR for a small glass)
i will definitely go back to try some more of their items, the doner, the burger etc. but i don't see it becoming a favourite.
oh, and check out the huge heart shaped sign with poetry on the wall. snort!

Pala (between Houston and Stanton) makes really great pizza!
the crust is thin which I like, they put a lot of effort into the process of making their dough, let it raise for 72 hours, use only organic ingredients and no chemical enhancers and you can even watch them preparing the pizza, in the open kitchen and on a screen listing their ingredients and photos of the dough balls non-stop (slightly annoying). toppings are organic and fresh. in short, the pizza is yummy. they recently even added gluten-free and vegan options (they use Daiya cheese). I picked the vegan Pizza Romana, sampled the appetizer Crostini and had a bite of their delicious soy sausage.
service was attentive, sometimes maybe a little overbearing, even interrupting nice conversation with my friends, I did feel well taken care of mostly, up until we paid and the waitress, Olivia, complained about our tip (15%) and made me feel extremely awkward. definitely left a bitter aftertaste and ended the evening on a not so pleasant note.
I would go back for the pizza, though.
I'd also recommend to reserve, as the place fills up quickly.

this place is really hippie.
and i can deal with hippie if it means spacey waitresses bringing you awesome and (mostly) raw delicious food. lunch and dinner menu are different, so i had to go back twice.
make sure to try one of their juices, you can order the "mood juice" if you dare and are not in a cranky, stressed out mood because then you might get sauerkraut? maybe? i say go for the Zing A Ding Ding and you won't regret it one bit. there's sandwiches and salads for lunch and great pick and choose platters for dinner. i had the mezze platter and tried a few bites of the thali platter and both were delicious and very filling.
there's raw ice cream, too watery and hard for my liking, and many other vegan raw desserts.
service is friendly and ... well, hippie. and there's a cute black restaurant cat napping on fluffy pillows.
vegan items marked on the menu.

I am a big fan of Austrian Hausmannskost and Rupps is absolutely catering to my need for vegan Schnitzel.
oh yeah, did i mention already this is a small publike spot that serves vegetarian and vegan food only. heaven!
their portions are generous, their food is greasy (in a good way) and the atmosphere is quite nice.
make sure to reserve a table if you come in a big group, and if you enjoy booze try some of the whisky. they have enough to please the irish. all of them.

Sacred Chow is a wonderful small restaurant and cafe with a slight hippie vibe.
their food is 100% vegan and organic and kosher and so so healthy and (or but still?) manages to taste amazing and rich & manages to be filling. Our waitress was friendly and cute and made us feel well taken care of. I went with their soup & half a sandwich special, cutely named souperhero, a healthy cherry vanilla soda and a big piece of strawberry shortcake with custard. everything at this place is vegan and organic and people with allergies are well taken care of here with the many gluten and soy free options.
They also cater events and you can order take out.

fuenf sterne, was sonst?

quirky and eclectic vintage and designer pieces collected in one small store that attracts models, tourists and designers looking for inspiration.
with its emphasis on leather and 70ies and 80ies fashions, this isn't really my cup of tea but all the colours and fun people make this worth a visit. Don't forget to pick up one of their flyers designed by the wonderful artist Fawn Gehweiler.

Small vegetarian/vegan restaurant (formerly known as Green way) that serves nice and healthy lunch menus at an affordable price.
always a few vegan options and most importantly: vegan dessert! i had a great chocolate cake on my first visit.
the clientele is very student/hippie/young, the place gets rather crowded around noon.
the atmosphere reminds me a little of a buffet at a students' home but the interior is nice enough with big wood tables and plants. didn't feel like i wanted to hang out there for long, though. more of a eat and leave kinda place.

Cafe/restaurant on a busy corner with great salads, soups, sandwiches and baked goods.
the staff is friendly; you order at the counter and then find a seat (it isn't a huge place so you have to be lucky), then the food is brought to you or your name is called.
coffee is good, there is free wifi (laptops are not welcome on the weekends), the place is affordable, so, in short, I really like it there!

it has been literally forever (almost 10 years) since i visited this joint but, i think, i had the best burrito in my whole life there.
ingredients were fresh and tasty and plenty. the burritos this place serves are so huge, we named them "baby heads" and rumour has it the local youth adopted this name and, who knows, maybe the tasty dish still goes by that name.
if i remember correctly the staff was very friendly and helpful when it came to vegan demands.

wonderful all vegetarian/ vegan Japanese restaurant serving sushi, maki, bento boxes and so much more.
wonderful creative sushi rolls, fried banana anyone?, served by a friendly and quick staff that was not overwhelmed with a hungry group of 25 people. Lovely desserts, too! Prices are fair, make sure to try their lovely bento boxes.

all vegan ice cream place with many delicious flavours to pick from.
I sampled a few of their flavours and went with a scoop of creamsicle -> yum! there is a celebrity connection but I'll let you figure that one out yourselves. we called ahead to see how long they would be open and they kept the place open until we arrived which was just wonderful.
the place is a little too sterile for my taste and decor is a little uncreative. I guess, I am just spoiled by Lula's old timey charm, though.
they sell Red Mango and Babycakes goodies, raw chocolates, in case your stomach isn't completely full after the ice cream.

this place gets 4 stars from me because it fed me when i was stranded in vegan-unfriendly-ville.
the nice lady warmed up thai spring rolls for me after showing the packaging to me so she can be 100% sure she is feeding me vegan food. there is a small section with food that has a few vegan goodies, and the rest of the store is filled with strange knick knacks and nice helpful ladies.

this place is every music-lovers wet dream.
it seems there is nothing this place doesn't have, every absurd genre can be found. armenian hip-hop? you'll probably find it or something really similar after hours of digging.
this place is not huge, so be prepared to rub bellies with sweaty men looking for that last rare recording to finish their collection. the atmosphere is great, people are friendly nerds, there's the random semi-famous DJ digging for old soul and funk records, there's old, young, punk, classical fan and everything in between.
my favourite spot is the little hidden corner w/ film soundtracks and musicals where i will forever dig around for recordings of Jesus Christ Superstar.
the family running this place knows their shit and answers your questions no matter how specific.
i don't think i have ever paid the full price there, so that's a lovely little extra.
great place, i know my non-existant grand-kids would buy their records at teuchtler, too.

thalia (how is miss the name amadeus!
) is a great book store, especially the english literature, the cook books and the kids books sections are pretty impressive.
but what i especially like about this store is its cafe. grab a few glossy art books and pricey magazines, order a coffee and read for hours.
the ground floor offers office and artist supplies en masse.
and the location cannot be topped.

wonderful neighbourhood coffee shop for those of us that don't want to support huge chains and dislike watery and burnt overpriced coffee.
the bean is roomy, has beautiful exposed red brick walls and cute paintings on the wall. Do not pass up a slice of their peanut butter cream cheese or you will regret it.

Their coffee is Fair Trade, organic and shade-grown & roasted locally in Brooklyn. They donate 10% of what they make to local charities, staff is friendly, there is a vegan sandwich on the menu and the baristas seem to know what they are doing. the place is big and comfy, long hang outs seem ok, no one is rushing you out of the place.

simple and delicious meals, a few vegan options and affordable prices.
served with soup and rice and a small dessert (slices of oranges) and quite spicy (then again, i am a wimp when it comes to spices).
not much of an atmosphere but since the place is small and there's probably people breathing down your neck and waiting to get seated you won't feel like hanging out there too long anyways. so enjoy the cheap and nice food and then get out of there.

this place is still just a short walk away from the busy mariahilferstrasse after its move.
this is vinyl-nerds-heaven, rare records, from the 60ies up to the 90ies, old gig posters and the occasional cheap score.
it's fun to eaves drop on old collector dudes and see the excitement on friends' faces when they find a first press sonic youth LP.
be prepared to drop quite some cash on the records but also do find great music you didn't think even existed anymore.

Toy Tokyo might be a little hard to find, it is located on the second floor of 121 2nd Avenue, between St.
Marks Place and 7th Street, so walk up that narrow staircase. The door opens to a store that has rooms stuffed with toys, t-shirts, pretty much everything a child at heart could dream of. star wars, star trek, the smurfs, hello kitty, gloomy bear and the moomins live here together. you can easily spend hours and all of your allowance here.

this store caters to the adventurous in fashion, studs, zippers, young design. if you like jeans and t-shirts this place might not have too much to offer for you but it's always nice to look around and pick up a nice pair of shoes and since the store has been around since the 70 ies, it's almost like checking out a piece of NYC punk history.

vegetasia will always have a special place in my heart, years ago it introduced me to mock meat, to vegetarian/vegan taiwanese cookery.
the all you can eat buffet is great if you wanna stuff yourself silly, and eventhough prices have been going way up over the years i still think it's affordable. just don't look at the schilling-prices, you will feel slightly nauseous.
service has gotten strange over the years, too. the permanent asking if you want big drinks, the reluctance to give you tab water and the vulturelike swooping in to ask if you want another drink are really annoying.
the "it was good, yeah?" at the end of your meal is just bizzare.
but vegetasia is great solid food, a place where you always meet somebody you know, a touring band, a friendly face.
the 3rd district vegetsia is more stylish but the ugly 7th district sister is definitely more charming.
