I have only been there twice. The service was ok (not great), and the pastry was ok (not great) but the coffee was quite good. Overall, I'd say it is living on its history and its reputation from many decades ago. So, alright, but I bet it was GREAT about 50 years ago!

A nice, friendly brew pub near the Hofbraukeller. I was only there once, but the soup was good and their beers are quite tasty. This is a part of town that few tourists seem to wander into. That's a shame, because the combination of the Unionsbrau and the Hofbraukeller can be much more enjoyable than the tourist-filled, much too loud Hofbrauhaus of across the river.

Pig'n Whistle Pub - (4/5)

This is a restored old restaurant from Hollywood's golden age. This is a spot where Harlow, Gable and a hundred other famous and once famous actors, writers and directors once dined. So, if you appreciate history, or feel that warm glow knocking back a drink at the same bar that Bogart once imbibed, this is the place for you. Other than the (more authentic) Formosa Cafe, this place really is a gem of old Hollywood.

The interior is very nice and the food is considerably better than the sordid collection of fast food horror stories and cheapo-weapo Mexican dives that infest this once-nice area. Wait, that didn't sound too encouraging, did it?

The food here is pretty good and the service has an added twist: All the waitresses are stunningly gorgeous! This is a place to see and be seen, and it seems that every young wanna be Hollywood starlet or prospective Playboy Centerfold works here. Yes, they are THAT pretty!

The only draw back is the very steep prices for drinks. A relat...

I ate here twice in 2003. It is a very nice, not very big restaurant with a friendly staff. The frogs legs were so-so, but the rabbit stew and the Flemmish stew we had were both superb.

What I remember most about this restaurant was the hot chocolate. In a land where chocolate goes from extremely good to simply sinful, the hot chocolate we had here was so incredibly good, so words-do-not-do-it-justice fantastic, that when I came home and tried to describe to friends and relatives how amazing it was, I almost had tears in my eyes. I simply do not have the vocabulary to descibe how perfect it was!

I have only been there twice, in 2006 and 2008, but both meals - and the meals of my friends and relatives - have all been very good.

I was here with my girlfriend in May, 2008. We only had four (4) short days in Amsterdam, but the meal we had at this restaurant was the best of all the eateries we sampled.

I really did not like the plain, modern interior, but the food was great. Service was also good. Plus, the street this restaurant is on has lots of restaurants and pubs, and the Spui Square is about a block or so away. A great restaurant in a really cool area of Amterdam, not far from the Singel Canal.

I was at this pub three or four times in 1990. Unfortunately, I have not been back into this nice little place since 1990 so it might have changed considerably.

This rather plain looking, late-night pub (it apparently does not open until 10:00pm or so) was (is?) run by a very nice man named Hans. There was a steady stream of friendly locals who kept popping in to say hello to their friend Hans. Many of these locals spoke at least a little English and they all tried their best to speak to us and make us feel welcome.

When we were there we initially thought that this place was frequented ONLY by locals. Then Hans pointed out an entire wall that was covered by postcards. There seemed to well over a hundred postcards sent by former customers from all over the world. Apparently, most if not all of them had, just like us, stumbled into this little pub completely by accident. And, just like us, they enjoyed the friendly and jovial Hans so much that they sent him a postcard from w...

McSorley's Old Ale House - (5/5)

Known rightly or wrongly as the oldest tavern in America, this place is both famous and fun!

McSorley's can get completely jammed packed with people at night. In fact, on weekend nights the line of people waiting to get in can stretch a half block. These people are then mostly tourists who can get very loud - and drunk.

McSorley's is my favorite pub in NYC - but not on a weekend evening! I do not like crowds, nor do I like being smushed like a fat sardine in a small can. My favorite time to go is on a weekday right after the lunch crowd dies down. Then it becomes a local pub with few tourists. It is then you can get the true "feel" of a very old, historic and beautiful living museum.

The beer is good, the food is good, and the spicy hot mustard for the (very tasty) cheese platters will peel the skin off your nose. Overall, it can be a great experience during the day, but a very crowded and noisy place on certain nights. So, go early, eat some cheese and hot must...

I later went to another one in or near Covina, and it was even worse. Maybe the people of Southern California think this is good food, but for me, it just plain stinks. Even McDonald's is better, Ugh!

This is a really nice, clean hotel that is not too expensive.

Only a 15 minute walk from any tourist spot, this pleasant hotel is in a quiet residential neighborhood. But that does not mean it is in the middle of nowhere. There a few good restaurants right down the street, plus there is a fantastic brewery with a very good beer hall and beer garden one block away. The owner, Herr Kuhn, is a very professional but nice man who runs a great hotel in a city dominated by over-priced and sometimes impersonal hotels that cater to tourists they'll never see again. Well, the Bergland has many repeat customers and there are many reasons why. Fod me, this is the best place to stay in all of Salzburg for anyone who is on a budget or is simply not rich.

By the way, they have a pretty good breakfast as well.

Yes, the inside hall is noisy and a little too modern for my tastes, but the garden is very nice. If you like a student crowd and all that goes with it, then you'll probably like it here. I give it four (4) stars for the garden and two (2) stars for the hall. So, overall three (3) stars seems about right.

This is more of a bar/student hangout with pool tables, reasonably good beers, and quite mediocre food. This building is not pretty or fancy, and other than for its historical value or for a quick beer, this place is nothing too special.

Historical value?? Like the Italian resataurant Osteria one (1) block away, Hitler used to visit this pub in the 1920's. He was brought here by his pal, Heinrich Hoffmann, the photapgrapher, whose office was 1/2 block away to the east (that building was ruined in the war). Hoffmann's employe was none other than Eva Braun, who soon became Hitler's girlfriend.

The Schelling Salon might not be a great place, but no matter how many times I visit Munich I always find myself wandering back into it. And, for all those who like to collect things from your vacations, the Schelling Salon sells beer glasses that are quite beautiful.

This is a very good Italian restaurant with an interesting past. For all of you who do not know it, this used to be Hitler's favorite restaurant in the 1920's. Some people avoid this restaurant for that reason, and many others go there BECAUSE of that reason. Since I teach history, I went there for the latter reason. Moral judgements aside, it is always interesting, at least for me, to sit, eat, drink, or simply experience any establishment where any famous (or infamous) person used to once frequent.

Regardless of its historical past, this is a very nice restaurant with very good food. Perhaps not the best, but this is a nice place that is definitely worth a visit.

The Hofbraukeller is one of my top three (3) favorite places in all of Munich. Small but beautiful biergarten, historic old building, good food and, of course, very good beer.

I have had the good fortune to have sipped a beer here a few times, but I ate there only once, in 1996. As I remember, the food was excellant and the waiter was extremely nice and patient with my very poor German.

This is not the loud, boisterous crazy house filled with insane, drunken tourists like the better-known Hofbrauhaus on the other side of the river. This place is much more relaxed, sane, and since there are few tourists there, it is thus filled with locals. In other words, it is a much more authentic German beer hall experience. Even though the beer might not be quite as good as Paulaner or Augustiner, I still really love it there.

Beautiful biergarten with equally beautiful keller (which many tourists don't even know about). Good food, friendly atmosphere, and probably the best beer in Munich. You simply can not go wrong in this place!

Very mediocre food and service, but what a great location!! If you wish to relax with a coffee or a beer and watch the Viennese world pass by, this is a stupendously great place. If you want good food and good service, go elsewhere.

If not for the fantastic location and the very nice, shaded front arcade to sit, this would get 2 stars at most.

Restaurant Winter - (4/5)

Small, very friendly family-owned resaurant on Alser Strasse. The outside of the building looks like something you'd see in an American shopping center, which probably throws off alot of prospective customers. But the inside is nice, the food good, and the staff friendly.

By the way, of all the times I have had Creme of Garlic soup, this place had - by far - the best. Not too strong, not too weak, just 100% right. I'd go back.

Das Lange - (4/5)

This is a small, no frills pub that has a loyal, local clientele. In fact, the staff seemed to know virtually each and every cuctomer by name and what they wanted to drink. But unlike some local pubs that can be less than friendly to an unknown face, the people at Das Lange were very nice, and treated me with just as warm a smile as all the "regulars."

Friendly, clean and fun, this small pub is, at least to me, the perfect little place to unwind and relax after a long day. The staff was always friendly, the customers polite, and the atmosphere quaint. Other than a quick snack, this is not the place to eat, but it definitely is a great place for a beer.

On a side note, I visited this pub several times in 2006 and 2008. Each time I asked the staff a multitude of historical questions. Many pub staff elsewhere might have gotten impatient with my constant questioning, but not here. Just like the nearby USW Beisl, the Das Lange always made me feel right at home, as if I w...

Centimeter III - (3/5)

I like it here - but not to eat.

As most people have reported, this is NOT a great (or even good) place to eat. However, why would you go to a place like this and expect a gourmet meal??? Other than a snack to be washed down with your 6th beer, there is no sane reason to eat here.

BUT!! I really like having a beer here. I can see that it is not for everyone. It kind of reminds me of a fraternity bar room setting. Now, if you're like me and you have fond memories of the fraternity bar room (gosh, I miss those days!) then you'll love it here. Yes, some of the young women who work here are not the sharpest tool in the shed, but so what? If you like a relaxed, low key place to have a beer and pretend you're still in college, this place is great!

I especially like sitting on the terrace. From there you get a great view of the neighborhood and you can watch the trolleys glide by. To me, this is a very comforting, relaxing place to sit and sip. I will definitely go back - but only...

Augustinerkeller - (3/5)

The first time I was at the Augustinerkeller was in January 1986 with a class from Lafayette College (Easton, PA - USA). That night was quite remarkable. The restaurant was packed with what looked like mostly locals. The staff was friendly, the food was good, and we had a smashingly good time.

When I returned in September 1990 and May 1999 it was much more quiet, the food was good, and many of the patrons were tourists. The visit in 1999 was marked by one of the employees being very friendly and accomodating to my then 78 year old mother who was in a wheelchair.

When I returned in 2006 and 2008 the staff seemed overtly indifferent, almost to the point of being rude. The food was ok, but our Wienerschnitzl apparently was pre-prepared and sitting under a lamp - we received it moments after we gave our order. Not so good. But, I suppose this is what happens when a restaurant caters mostly to tourists for much of the year.

I guess this is a hit or miss restaurant. It is ve...

Il Sestante - (5/5)

I wandered into this restaurant in June, 2008. I was alone and very tired and looking for a nice place to relax and write in my travel journal. I had noticed how many people were often in this establishment, and they all seemed to be having a wonderful, fun time. So, I dropped in to give it a try.

Yes, the food was very good and I enjoyed it immensely. However, the food is not what stood out in this restaurant - it was the friendliness of the staff. Though they had never seen me before, and even though my German was very limited, the people at this restaurant treated me like I was a valued regular customer, as if I was one of the locals that they saw on a regular basis. Being an American I have suffered through my share of bad, indifferent or just incompetent waiters. But this place was certainly the opposite in every way possible.

I just can't get over how incredibly nice they were to me. Whenever I will be lucky enough to go back to Vienna, I will make sure I eat at this...

Restaurant Samrat - (4/5)

I ate at this Indian restaurant in 2006 and 2008. This restaurant is not very big or fancy, but the food was very good. This is yet another nice, local establishment that seems to be visited by few tourists. The section of Josefstadt is blessed with a very good variety of pubs and eateries, almost all of them extremely nice. They are supposed to have a very good (and inexpensive) lunch buffet, but I have not tried it yet.

Also, the owner was very nice and he speaks great English.

U.S.W. Beisl - (5/5)

I visited this pub in 1986, 1990, 1999, 2006 and 2008.

I really can't say enough about this friendly, local neighborhood pub. Each and every time I have gone there - regardless of who was behind the bar or how crowded or how empty it was - I have always had a good time and the people were always very friendly.

The choice of both food and beer is somewhat limited (though good), but this is not how I rate a pub. Of all the pubs, beisls, beer halls or beer gardens I have been to, the USW Bar is the one that I have always felt most comfortable in. The people of the 8th District are very fortunate to have such a great pub right in their back yard!

Thank you for making my all too infrequent visits so very enjoyable!

I was in this restaurant in May 2006. Though I could speak a very limited amount of German the people there were very nice to me. I only had a coffee and a bowl of Gulash (which was very good), but overall my short visit was very pleasant.

I'd say this is a small, friendly restaurant that caters to the local neighborhood, a nice place that few tourists will ever find. I would definitely go back to this restaurant.

The Franz Josef Bahnhof right up the street, however, is repulsively ugly.
