Byways Cafe - (5/5)

I came here on a recommendation from a coworker and loved it! It's a 1950's style diner adorned with collectibles from all 50 states like plates, spoons, snowglobes, etc. I had the cornbeef hash and it's probably the best I've had in Portland. The service is great, the setting is very comfortable, and the service is quite prompt. I recommend it to everyone looking for breakfast in the Pearl.

Clyde Common - (5/5)

They serve "European peasant food" at a reasonable price and it's prepared with incomparable skill. Their hamburger sandwich is amazingly tender and literally melts in your mouth (I never fully appreciated that phrase until I had this burger). The bar menu is "small" but they save the best for last with it. They open at noon, the kitchen is open until midnight, and they shut the doors around 1-1:30am. You can choose between communal seating (a la Montage) or a smaller table just for you and your significant other, and while the music is played loudly it's never too loud to have a romantic dinner.

Half & Half - (5/5)

This cute and tiny local favorite is the place to go when downtown for light meals and snacks. While there are definitely vegan options, the special sandwiches are often more meat-oriented. The daily soups are hearty and flavorful, the pies scrumptious, and I always have a debate over the deviled eggs. If you're lucky you'll get your (Stumptown) coffee served in a lovely blue cup.

On top of all this, they are dedicated to serving quality food. I have to respect a cafe that will tell me straight-up, "We don't have tomatoes right now because they aren't any good," and then offer a substitution.
