kokoro - (5/5)

This quite possibly could evolve to be my new favorite restaurant in town. Hidden away in a courtyard off Rotenturmstrasse is a tiny, discreet, open-kitchen eatery, run by an Austrian chef who seems to have spent much of his working time in Asia. The menu changes daily, is sometimes type-, sometimes handwritten or, in our case, verbally presented by the lovely Korean hostess.

€15.- will get you a three-course meal, ours was a plentiful, impossibly fresh Won-Ton soup, a truly yummy meat and vegetable main course and some fresh fruit and home-made yoghurt for dessert. Fantastic!

The service was exemplary and the crowd as diverse as it gets; in the evening it seems to aim at a more business casual crowd, the prices are higher, but oh my, did the menu look promising!

For my taste Kokoro combines all the necessary elements a good restaurant needs to have: sophisticated, playful and confident cuisine, welcoming and open atmosphere and a certain cosmopolitan approach which doesn't ever...

Traditional, authentic and "ehrlich" Gasthaus with an ambitious menu; the food (I had Deer Bratwurst with lentils and Knödel) was fresh and actually surprisingly wonderful, which could be due to the abundance of butter used to cook it :) The rest of the menu looked very appealing as well. Good stuff, would definitely go again.

It's probably just me, but if you have a beautifully decorated, romantic, cozy little place with pretty good food and have the radio blaring out Oe3, it kinda ruins the moment. So yeah, for that and the average service this only gets three stars, although it is absolutely worth a visit!

Why these are mentioned in pretty much all the guidebooks is beyond me. Anyways, if you want a true slice of Viennese Gasthaus life, go across the street to Wickerl.

Most likely the one and only place in town where you can get Cigköfte, a unique delicacy from eastern anatolia. Raw minced meat is mixed with an abundance of herbs and chilis spices, kneaded (by hand!) for a couple hours and then served with salad, chilis and lemon. It looks like pieces of play-dough and has an admittedly acquired taste (pretty damn hot, too!), but is hereby highly, highly recommended! Also try the Cigköfte Dürüm. They have expanded their selection considerably in the past few weeks but I haven't had a chance to try any of it. Yet.

A very welcome addition to the wasteland surrounding the Franz-Josefs Bahnhof. Sasso D'Oro tries hard to be as authentically italian as possible and pretty much succeeds on most levels: the Pizzas are wonderful, thin and crispy and they have quite a few unique creations and some wonderful (if pricey) ones with Mozzarella di Bufalo. The meat and fish dishes were mostly great so far, the Minestrone is the best I've ever had outside of Italy. Haven't tried the wines yet, but they're exclusively from Italy. The owner is big, burly, friendly fellow who will go out of his way to accomodate you, which helps overlook the fact that the service is a bit chaotic at times. Huge Schanigarten!

Echo - (2/5)

It's a bit of a deja vu when you enter this place, it seems to be stuck in this romantic notion of Thailand circa 1998...interiors are vaguely colonial, the soundtrack comes courtesy a Buddha Bar compilation (or some other generic downtempo aural carpeting) and the waitress had that funky Beach-thing going on, dreadlocks n piercings and whatnot. So far, so Alex Garland.

Numerous, no: countless signs (and folders and posters...) advertise the fact that, yes, they travel with Eva Air (three times a week to Bangkok) although judging from the food they haven't really been there recently...
We had two starters, deep-fried-to-death spring rolls, which were more chinese than Thai, and Dim Sum, which were just chinese. My fault, I probably shoulda gone with the yummy-sounding salads, but the prices turned me off.
Main dishes weren't bad, they were just horribly bland and listless. The shrimp curry was soggy, just an uninspired mess of vegetables and average shrimps. Same went for the Wok ...

Indian Pavilion - (5/5)

The smallest, friendliest and downright best Indian restaurant in Vienna. Small selection of yummy and spicy curries, Samosas, Thalis and the like. Make sure and ask for the Mango pickles and the various chutneys they offer on the side!

Great little authentic Sushi Bar, barely seats more than 10 people. I seriously doubt it's the first Sushi place in town, but it's certainly one of the best.

I've been coming here for nearly 20 years and very little has changed, which is comforting in a way. Service is fine, can be a bit typically Viennese in the evening. Food is hit or miss, but the coffee and ambience cannot be beat.

Bombay - (2/5)

Shoddy interiors, average food, not at all suitable for vegetarians. Service was relatively unfriendly when we were there, but the place was packed and they were stressed.
Oh and when I reserve well in advance I expect to get a good table, not the one in the corner by the coats and next to the bathroom entrance.
