Thee Parkside - (5/5)

At the self-touted San Francisco's Premier Dive Venue, the question at Thee Parkside isn't what you'll find, its more like what you won't find here, which is very little. This spot is just a hop, skip and jump across the street from Bottom of the Hill (why not make a day of it and combine the two?) definitely leans towards the rockabilly/country/rock n roll/garage punk/60s soul/surf side of things. Meet cowboys/cowgrrls on Free Country Sunday, jukebox is so good i'm not even gonna mention it, cheery garden in the back, they got foodz too!

Do you really think there are enough stars here to rate the best of the best? Back in 2001 when dot-commies were ruining my city there was talk of them (along with a good portion of artists, musicians and the like) being forced out to Oakland, as they could not afford the rent anymore. Well all i can say, thank you for January 2001, the month it all crashed, as BOTH hasn't budged an inch since. Any band who has made or is making any impact plays here. If you haven't played here, you haven't played San Francisco quite yet. My favourite thing about BOTH was the sunday afternoon BBQ! As far as I know it still goes on and is around $7, starts late afternoon, and gets you 3-4 bands and ze foods. Not 100% veggie friendly last time i checked -- you'll have to stick to corn-on-the-cob, potato salad and the like. Don't leave SF w/o seeing a band here. Show up any night of the week, doesn't matter, you'll be pleasantly suprised. Garden in the back will keep smokers sated - you won't technically have to leave the bar. The crowd here is generally quite mixed and laidback, its ALL about the rock.

A to-the-core biker/messenger bar, it doesn't get anymore punk rock than this. That being said, one of the coolest dives in the Mission (let alone San Francisco) as its not a 'scene', its completely unpretentious, and the crowd is deliciously mixed. Weed-friendly in the back garden. Sometimes they do film festivals outside too. They've got the requisite dodgy hostel upstairs, a kitchen that does every kind of BBQ (veggie options too) on the weekend. Packed when the sun is out, its the best way to spend a day among 'real' San Franciscans. Spend a few hours here, crammed on rows and rows of picnic benches between friends and strangers, make new friends, make one-night friends, don't leave without having the best, spiciest, lip-smackingest Bloody Mary (the Margaritas here will knock you on your ass, as well) in the city, and if you're still able to stand by dusk, make sure you get 2 or 3 tamales (you won't be able to stop at just one) from the Mission's world famous "Tamale Lady". She'll sell one to you for 2 bucks. The jukebox is a favourite in the city - you really can't miss with Ween's 10 Golden Country Greats, Gram Parsons or Turbonegro. Hell yes!

I would venture to say this is the best SF venue, save for Bottom of the Hill. Lets just say its the best small venue for music in SF, then. Or your favourite Tendernob local. Whatever you like, darling. Fer ye smokers out there, due to some nifty lil design thinking, you can actually sit in a bar in SF and smoke (its a detached room you enter from inside the bar). And the best part? You're not charged a cover to enter the bar just to drink when there are shows! They collect your bucks at the back so no worries if you just need some Budweiser in you. The best jukebox in the city (Zeitgeist is the 2nd best) -- where else are you gonna find Kimya Dawson on a juke, the best nights of my life have been spent here...

Lounge Spot in Boys Town (The Castro), where folks from all around the city come out to chill. Straight, Gay and anything in between come here for their tastey and satifying small shared plate menu. Friendly staff, clean and modern interiors, and what I believe to be one of the best mojitos in the city.
