A typical Viennese coffee house, the Westend is situated directly opposite the Westbahnhof train station, and I guess this means they don't have to try very hard to attract patrons. The flair is there (non-Viennese readers: this means grumpy waiters and somewhat smoky), and it's comfortable enough, but the food is nothing to write home about, and the coffee is actually pretty bad.
It's okay for quick get-togethers, when its location near both the U3 and U6 subways is advantageous. For all other purposes it's pricey and not on par with the district's other offerings.
I can't believe how run down this place looks these days. It used to be my goto cafe in my younger years, now it seems to be a smoke filled and uncomfortable place filled with annoying people. At least in the evening. The food is good though.
Conveniently located right across from Vienna's main train terminal, Westbahnhof, Cafe Westend is your typical turn-of-the-century, Viennese coffee house offering traditional dishes, snacks, pastries and a slew of coffees and drinks. Non-smokers beware - this is Philip Morris territory. Another foreboding: order "just a coffee" and prepare to meet your maker! The Viennese appreciate their coffee and expect specificity.
