Contrary to popular belief, the best Vietnamese in the city is not Tu lan or anywhere else in the TL (tenderloin) for that matter. Go against your gut, and head for the Mission. Yes, the mission. The most gorgeous Vietnamese you've ever had. It has 2 locations, roughly at the same address. The two entrances share the same kitchen but you can't walk from one side to the other. While they are both located at 16th and Valencia, make sure you enter from the 16th St. side, not the Valencia one. The former is tiny, but brighter, friendlier, and great for 16th st hipster gazing. I used to go here at least once a month, and they knew me by name! Wonderful Pho ( say "fuh" when you are there and gain some points) even a vegetarian one that always cured me of a cold whenever i had one, you will never eat better fresh spring rolls (with prawns or veggie style) they are like butter, and you gotta have the lemongrass tofu. Come at lunchtime and you get it all for hella cheap.
