My favorite falafel in Vienna and some darn good hummus also! The Nil is famous for it's fine Egyptian cooking and it's casual and friendly atmosphere. The coffee is incredible. The only problem I have with Nil is the amount of cigarette smoke! In the winter months you get a giant mouthful of throat choking cigarette smoke when getting into the door. I don't see the smoking problem in Vienna going away anytime soon I'm afraid.Siebensterngasse 39 1070 Vienna -
A vegan or vegetarian's dream come true. All you can eat lunch buffet with over 10 dishes, plus soups, desert, sushi and rice. The majority of the buffet is vegan (just ask if you aren't sure what is or isn't). If an all you can eat buffet isn't your thing, they also have a super affordable lunch menu including many mock-meat dishes with tea and desert included. Their dinner menu is also a treat. 50+ items, lots of mock-meat items (their fried chicken is incredible!). Great 'date spot' for young veggies or traveling veggies who want to get a taste of great Taiwanese vegetarian cooking. The 1070 location is a bit more aged and darker atmosphere. This is where you'll want to bring your parents or date when you want a nice quiet evening out with some great veggie food.Kaiserstrasse 45 1070 Vienna -
Maybe not the first, but certainly one of the best vegan fast food joints in Vienna. Their burgers are juicy and Samolis certainly grills up one of the best vegan cheeseburgers I've had in Europe. Their burger combo (vegan cheeseburger + bottled drink + amazing pommes for 6 EUR) can't be beat. The interior is a bit small with room for around 8 people to sit and eat and the lighting could be a bit softer, but, overall, Sam and Oli put their hearts into their shop and are happily filling the bellies of Vienna's veg-heads.Schwarzspanierstraße 22 1090 Vienna -
St. Josef is my absolute favorite restaurant in Vienna. As Wolfgang D. says, the service is absolutely caring, the food always fresh and the atmosphere always warm and welcoming. The staff are wonderful, usually remembering you on your next visit. A bit pricey, but well well worth it. Their schnitzel burgers are famous for being a great takeaway snack. Their salad bar is off the chain, featuring tons of extremely fresh salads and healthy dishes to pile onto your plate. Also, their store is connected to their restaurant, so, all you have to do is eat a nice meal, pay (you can even pay AFTER you eat, how's that for respecting your clientèle?) , then walk over to the store and buy what you need for dinner. I'd give it 6-stars if I could!Zollergasse 26 1070 Vienna -
Having walked the streets of Vienna for years, I've always had a feeling of emptiness, one with which only proper vegan ice cream could fill. Well, Zanoni filled it. I can't stress the importance here. Not content with playing around with weak fruit flavored frozen ice and calling it vegan-friendly ice cream, Zanoni has gone out of their way to offer several flavors of lactose-free, cholesterol-free ice cream, that actually taste like ice-cream. I highly recommend the chocolate / Nutella mix! Open 365-days a year for added potential, cheap and plentiful portions which will give brain-freeze for your entire walk home.Lugeck 7 1010 Vienna -
Maschu is famous in Vienna for it's takeaway falafel sandwich. Maschu stuffs their falafel sandwiches full of tahini, falafel, veggies (including kraut) and various sauces, all for less than 3,50 EUR each. They have quite a few vegetarian and vegan options in addition to their falafel sandwich (try their hummus!) and their prices are pretty reasonable (but getting higher every 6 months it seems). Their service is a bit lacking sometimes, so if it looks busy and you actually want some service, it's probably better for you to turn around and head somewhere elseLindengasse 41 1070 Vienna -
I don't even know where to start with Cafe Mentone. Everything about it is amazing, from the lovely husband and wife team who run the place, to their incredibly affordable menu (large espresso and an apfeltstrudel runs you less than 5 EUR!), to the charming pictures from Richard Gere hanging up in the cellar. The service is top notch and I can certainly say this is the best place to grab a quick and affordable coffee within the 7th.Kirchengasse 7 1070 Vienna -
Some of the most famous coffee in Vienna and certainly one of the most well-known coffee houses. The service has always been good for me, their coffee is nice and smooth and sitting in the Sperl always gives you the feeling you're in old-time Wien enjoying a cheap cup of joe. Prices are quite ok for Vienna, though, there certainly are cheaper options, but why miss-out on the history and atmosphere of the Sperl just to save a few Euro-cents?Gumpendorfer Strasse 11 1060 Vienna -
Vego is one of the few all you can eat vegetarian/vegan Indian buffets in Vienna and they know it. The food is quite good with there usually being a handful of different yummy curries for you to choose from. The service leaves a bit to be desired, but it's possible I've just hit them on bad days. A tip, be prepared to pay for the bread on the buffet. That was a surprise for me the first time I went, hopefully that's a policy that's changed. Note to self: Don't assume that bread placed on an all you can eat buffet is also all you can eat.Neubaugasse 81 1070 Vienna -
Rhiz is without a doubt the best club in Vienna to have a drink with friends AND discover new and obscure electronic artists and DJs. The sound system is intense for such a small room, so remember to bring your earplugs if you're going to see a noise show. The service is great, with all the waiters and waitresses being super cool and surprisingly pleasant. I say surprisingly because they are on the Gürtel, so I'm sure they have their fair share of the insane walking in and out. Rhiz is also a longtime supporter of advanced technology, offering live streaming audio and video over the internet, probably before most of us even knew it were possible.Lerchenfelder Gürtel 37-38 1080 Vienna -

A very cool idea for a buffet, eat all you want, but pay what you think it's worth, leaves one open to completely reinvent their dining experience. Was the combination of food quality, service and experience good enough to warrant paying more than 5 euro for the buffet or should I pay a little more? In all honesty, yes, you should, but again, it's completely up to you, which is the point I'm trying to get across. The curries are a piping hot (in temperature), the service is acceptable and the fact that I'm only paying full price for drinks is a great thing to remind yourself as your going back for your third of fourth plate of dahl masala. I'd recommend reserving a table in the evening, but be sure to ask for a table on the first or second floor, the third floor, while cozy and charming, stinks of cigarette smoke, is as hot as a sauna thanks to the heat-pumping utility lamps they use and is usually packed full of cheap students who sit in the worst placed positions, effectively blocking your way to cheap curry nirvana.Liechtensteinstrasse 10 1090 Vienna -

Extremely impressive cafe, cultural center and emerging technology hub. You can tell the workers and owner put a lot of thought into creating a comfortable environment for everything from having cocktails, to watching fashion shows, to pondering over tech talks. Free WLAN, prices are quite ok, the owner is usually hanging out and making sure customers are happy. What else can you ask for?Schönbrunnerstrasse 61 1050 Vienna -
One of the must-visit locations for ice cream in Vienna. Gelato has been around for over 100 years and is world famous for both their ice cream and their location. But, that's not all. Gelato specifically offers a daily VEGAN ICE CREAM flavor for those of us who prefer no animal hormones in our after-dinner treats. Bam!Franz-Josefs-Kai 17 1010 Vienna -
A surprising find, the Ronahi is a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant hidden in a somewhat quiet street in the 7th. Interior is nice and clean, featuring 2 floors and comfortable, casual seating around darkwood tables with gentle music throughout. The food is filling and quite affordable, since it seems students are Ronahi's primary demographic. Oh, Ronahi provides free wireless internet, so, expect to be surrounding by a handful of students clacking away on their keyboards while downing a bowl of hummus. OH, one more thing, they have DR PEPPER on the menu. You Amerikanskis know what I'm talking about.Schottenfeldgasse 18 1070 Vienna -
Go. Now. Small, warm and welcoming family-run restaurant, with two of the nicest owners I've ever met, serving some of the tastiest curry I've ever had in Wien. Oh, and finally curries that have some sort of spice and taste to them! The all you can eat buffet features 5 vegetarian / vegan curries, a giant bucket of rice, all you can grab pappadam, a salad bar and a tasty soup. Fill up your plates, fill up your stomach and have a pleasant and smoke-free experience. It's almost unheard of! Oh yeah, they also have 3 additional curries with meat in them for you blood mouths.Hofferplatz 5 1160 Vienna -

One of the best English cinemas in Vienna. Prices are ok, with 3 cinemas, 1 large and 2 smaller one. Usually has the British or US blockbusters, but sometimes has a hip indie film or two. The large cinema is where the major releases are shown, with a pretty good quality screen and sound system, though with action films you sometimes notice a little distortion from the speakers. You know, if you actually pay attention to that stuff.Mariahilferstrasse 57 1060 Vienna -
Before I ended up working full-time x2 the Deli was where anyone could find me. Their hummus is 9 times out of 10 absolutely perfect and their all you can eat bread policy is a damn good one. The addition of a falafel wrap to their menu was a brilliant one and for the price, it's a monster deal which could almost feed 2 people if you're counting the salad and all the lovely grease pouring off of it. There are quite a few vegan options and even more vegetarian ones, so, those preferring no meat need not worry. The atmosphere is of course Naschmarkt, it's usually hit or miss, depending on if there's a hip music festival going on or not or if some hip DJ is spinning at another location. The service is also a bit hit or miss, sometimes you've got an extremely nice waiter/tress who is one step below Mother Theresa or the Pope, the other time you have an aspiring actress/model who thinks you should be photographing her while she's conveniently ignoring your need for a refill of bread.Naschmarkt, Stand 421-436 1040 Vienna -
Finally made it to Caffe Latte after years of walking past and wondering what really was going on inside that dark and opposing storefront. Inside the cafe is covered in dark wood floors, shiny glass and surprisingly pleasant waiting staff. Coffee is quite ok, though, no soy milk, but hey, what can ya do? Free and fast WLAN is a huge plus.Neubaugasse 39 1070 Vienna -
Hot damn, a Formosa cafe in Vienna is a dream come true. Formosa being the distributor of all the fine mock meats that every other vegan/vegetarian restaurant uses in their meals. The meals are all extremely hearty, full of fake meat, rice and salad, with a side of warm spiced soy milk included! They have a different soup almost everyday, this visit of mine being one of the best damn pumpking and mushroom soups I've ever had. The service is attentive *almost* to the point of being over-bearing, but not quite reaching that point. Prices are insanely affordable and it's hard to sit next to their fridges full of mock meats without taking home a few packages of whatever was just in the meal they served you. The cafe area is smaller, with seating for 8, so if you are in a group of 3 or more, call ahead and reserve the big table. Oh, not on the menu, but ask if they can make you a mixed plate, it's full of different mock meats and rice for 6.80 EUR and well worth it if they feel like making it for you.Barnabitengasse 6 1060 Vienna -
One of Philly's most famous (or infamous) veggie/vegan locations. Italian vegetarian and vegan food for sit in or take out. Their pizzas are outstanding, piled high with fake meats and cheese, nice and greasy, just like my carnivore pizza shop used to make. Their cheesesteaks are off the hook, spilling over with cheese and mock meats making it feel like you were a meat-mouth all over again. Don't get me started on their vegan cakes! The things they do with their cakes and pastries would make any self-respecting veggie/vegan pass out and/or go check their weight on a scale, immediately.507 S 6th St Philadelphia, PA 19147 -
A diamond in the rough on Neubaugasse! Ellie is charming and welcoming to all of her guests, taking the time to get to know everyone who walks in. The interior is small, but extremely warm, making for an almost perfect environment to sit down, grab a sandwich and enjoy a nice Soy Latte on a slow afternoon.Neubaugasse 45 1070 Vienna -
Amoeba isn't considered the best record store in the country (planet?) for nothing. Built inside of an old bowling alley, Amoeba SF is a vinyl lovers dream, stocking the hottest collection of punk, indie and hardcore vinyl in one giant room about about explode with independent music. Also featuring a large DVD and book selection, Amoeba is the king, queen and court of independent record stores in the US and should be the first stop on any touring band or music lovers itinerary when in San Fran.1855 Haight St San Francisco, CA 94117
