The prices are a lot more expensive than I am used to in LA, but it's American Apparel man! A little slice o home. Some of the best clothes, and you can buy knowing that you support a company that pays people a living wage --no sweatshop shit.
One of my favorite bars in FFM. Anita Honis, the owner of this candle lit pub, is originally from Harlem. She made large contributions to the jazz and blues scenes in the 1960's, and on any given night she will make a few trips up to the stool to belt out some standards, play guitar, or maybe piano. She encourages customers to do the same. She's a wonderful woman with a beautiful voice, and her rendition of Mr. Bojangles almost brought me to tears.
The Städel Museum bookshop. They have a lot of art books, mostly in German, but some in English. They also stock a lot of trinkets and cool art-related items.
Cookys is one of those places that is the last open on a long night. I have ended up there once or twice and I really didn't like it much. It seems a run-of-the-mill R&B/pop 'club' in the basement of a building downtown.
The only reason I have ever heard to go there is because 'it's open'; that says something.

Maingold is a great cafe on Zeil, though it's usually packed. It usually frequented by a lot of students, and the sidewalk out front often looks like a bike sale. Cheap drinks, great atmosphere and people. Best to show up early or show up late.

Cafe upstairs, club downstairs. This venue is so tiny it would be hard to park two cars in it, but it snags the best indie acts that come through FFM. I saw Metric and Biff Naked here, the Metric show was one of the best concerts I have ever been to.
Great comic book store, their basement is full of English comic books. They stock all the latest comics, trade papers, and art books. T3 also has a pretty good range of figures and collectibles. They also have role playing gear.
However everything is somewhat overpriced. The avg 19.99USD trade paper is usually 25-30EUR
