Closed Cafe Europa
Zollergasse 8
1070 Vienna

Reviewed 30. Dec 2007

A good cafe by day, Europa offers good breakfast and hot meals, free wifi and a decent atmosphere. The service crawls to a halt when the place gets crowded, but then they are one of the few spots that don't disregard an order for a large glass of water to go with your coffee.

At night, it's kind of a different story though - drinking your beer while seated around tables is a pretty isolating experience, and the audience which seems to have a more generic, bland vibe to it than in other venues in the district adds to that. Also, if you're not at the bar, ten to fifteen minutes for the process of ordering and receiving your drink is not unusual.

Closed Cafe Westend
Mariahilfer Strasse 128
1070 Vienna

Reviewed 05. Jan 2008

A typical Viennese coffee house, the Westend is situated directly opposite the Westbahnhof train station, and I guess this means they don't have to try very hard to attract patrons. The flair is there (non-Viennese readers: this means grumpy waiters and somewhat smoky), and it's comfortable enough, but the food is nothing to write home about, and the coffee is actually pretty bad.
It's okay for quick get-togethers, when its location near both the U3 and U6 subways is advantageous. For all other purposes it's pricey and not on par with the district's other offerings.

Closed elektro gönner
Mariahilfer Strasse 101
1060 Vienna

Reviewed 30. Dec 2007

My favorite home away from home. The odd thing about the Gönner is that there seems to be no discernible pattern as to when the place is almost empty and when it's bursting (hence only four out of five).
For the most part though, the Gönner is a great place with a great crowd and frequent DJ treats (FM4's Milieu Kess on Sundays would be my recommendation).
Non-residents will also find that its somewhat hidden backyard location will impress their co-travellers (go there early and have a backup plan!)

Closed Futuregarden
Schadekgasse 6
1060 Vienna

Reviewed 30. Dec 2007

An artsy little bar, hard to find as they didn't have any sign up last time I checked. I've been there a couple of times, and as much as my friends have enjoyed it, I've always found the experience a bit of a downer.
I'm pretty sure it's just that the crowd seems to be a few years older than me on average, and that I'll become a loving regular once I hit 30 - at which point this three star rating will be revised and I will never speak of it again.

Where oh where can you find those wonderful Japanese soups in Vienna? Right here.
Tiny place, wonderful cooking.

Closed Phil
Gumpendorferstrasse 10-12
1060 Vienna

Reviewed 30. Dec 2007

phil presents an inviting mix of bar/café, bookstore, record-store, furniture-shop and - judging from the number of macbooks hooked up to the free wifi - public office. It excels at all of these. Great and friendly service and an audience that tends to be very approachable and open make this a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.
While non-smokers will find this to be one of the nicest hipster cafés in town, smokers may prefer the slightly less comfy "Möbel" (Burggasse), which has been similarly executing the bar/furniture-shop/wifi combo for a good while.

Closed Ra'mien
Gumpendorferstrasse 9
1060 Vienna

Reviewed 30. Dec 2007

A well known modern Thai restaurant, the Ra'mien is unfortunately unable to deliver on its reputation's promise - the noodles aren't bad and it's nice to see them be prepared on the spot, but there is a blandness to the food that extends all the way to the curry.
Downstairs there's a gimmicky Thai style cocktail bar that seems to attract mainly jocks and business folk.
Not my cup of noodles.

Closed Ronahi
Schottenfeldgasse 18
1070 Vienna

Reviewed 05. Jan 2008

I've eaten at Ronahi once. The food was pretty great and not at all expensive, but the service was strange at best - when I asked the waiter for a menu, he gave me a bewildered look. A few minutes later he came back and asked "Have I been to this table before?". I ordered a drink twice, but it never arrived.

Nevertheless, good atmosphere, free wireless, great selection of food, and I'll be sure to go back and check out the café upstairs.
